Many agree that P.T. Barnum got it right....one born every minute!
Could you take it for a test drive?
There's a bridge for sale in NY at a very reasonable price; any takers?

I’m in Saint Maarten right now (on a cruise), and leave in 2 hours. One shop is offering a 850, body only for $1000. Claims it’s made in Japan, with us warranty. Too good to be true? Any thoughts.
Yes, I agree, Buy three. Make P. T. Barnum proud. There is a sucker born every minute it has been said, now I think their may be one born every second.
I don't know what is more LOL....the question here or the 2 or 3 responders that came up with some 'explanation'. And I did actually laugh this morning. Nice way to start the day. Thanks.

Now after all that advise, you can prove them wrong, just post us a couple photos from it after you get home.

I don't believe they are made in Japan, my D810 was not.
St. Maarten is characterized for selling electronics at reasonable prices but I cannot comment on cameras. There is no way you could buy a camera like the D850 anywhere in the Caribbean for that price, not even gray market. Most places will cheat on the price stating they are selling tax free and that includes the ship. My conclusion, after cruising through several of the islands has been that we can buy cheaper and with an excellent warranty from NY.
I purchased by D810 by this method whilst cruising, can't remember the island we landed on to get to the shop, I have not had a moments regret, they are just no tax, purchase tax or vat. Mine would have cost £2.800 in "England I paid £1,300 ish can't remember the extact amount. but the cruise staff recommended this particular shop and said a lot of professionals on the cruise just to go to this island to make purchases, I double checked with a few passengers too. So not all bad just very low prices, just be cautious.

Now on to another thread. Camerapapi is right. 35-40 years ago the Islands, particularly St. Maarten, were a great place to find deals on camera equipment. NYC had a couple/few major retailers; but there was not the internet. This had a major impact on buying decisions. This is why places like the islands were so inviting for camera equipment. The exchange rates (dollar/Franc/Deutschmark) also had a significant impact. The cost of fashion and high end equipment from these countries, in the islands and with their trading partners, could be significantly less expensive in some of these 'tax free' zones.
This is not the case today. Especially with camera equipment. There is absolutely no reason to make any type of major camera or lens purchase in the islands; unless your's broke and you are in a desperate situation. Even that would not convince me. I could buy over the internet (from a major player) and have it shipped to me! Also, buying in(or from) your own country, and not buying grey market; ensures that the manufacturer will back up your product.
When traveling in Europe, I would go into certain stores just to compare prices. Even with today's Euro, camera equipment usually can be purchased for less in the USA.
So, my lesson learned is to buy at 'home' and buy from a reputable dealer.
