Ultra Wide Lens Dilemma

I want to add an ultra wide to my existing lenses which I now use with my D7100. The question I have for you much more experienced folks is - do I go with the Nikkor 12-24mm f/4 AF-S DX, the Nikkor 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 AF-S ED-G DX, or the Nikkor 10-20mm AF-P DX VR. I am leaning toward the 10-20 AF-P. The price is certainly one discriminant but so is the VR capability absent on the other two. But will the AF-P function without limitation on my D7100? I am also planning to add a D500 on which I believe the AF-P will work without limitation. I appreciate any and all advice you may provide. Thanks.

How about a prime? Especially at super wide, the compromises in zooms are troublesome.

Also, at super wide, VR is less important. Remember the rule of thumb: 1/focal_length is good for hand-held (no VR) shooting. So 1/10th to 1/20 th of a second for such a lens.

BTW, there is a recent D7100 firmware update that addresses AF-P lenses. I had a similar dilemma several years ago and went with Tokina 12-24. Great price and performance.

There have been some concerns raised about that fw update, namely, some third party lenses will no longer function properly.

I’ve seen a lot of good reviews on the Tokine lens. Good choice.

I currently own the 12-24 and the 10-24. The 12-24 is an excellent lens but old technology, it is heavy and sharp and used mint off ebay would be a good deal. The 10-24 is also an excellent lens that I use in combination with my 18-200 on vacations. I do not use either lens that much, I find them limiting but good in the right situation.
If it was me, and it is not, and I had to do it all over again, I would go with the 10-20 because of the price, and because I do not use that lens that much, and because the 10-20 is getting excellent reviews and because it is a G lens which has a electronic diaphragm which is the latest development from Nikon. Yes, all three lenses would work great on your D7100 and a future D500.

The firmware update addresses the AF-P lens while at the same time causes problems with some Sigma lenses. This has been happening for a dozen years at least. Sigma then updates their firmware and in most, if not all, cases everybody gets along just fine.

Pick your new lens based on what will give you the pictures you want ... and be happy!

Wow, that didn't take long! I'm not interested in any P lenses at this point. My wife even said so! BTW, there are several recent updates including one for the D500.

There were two versions of a couple of them, the 12-24 being one. The AT-X 124 PRO DX II was the one to get, probably around $300 tops used.

As suggested earlier you might want to take a look at the Tokina 12-24. I have one on my d7200, great lens very sharp and fast.

I use a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. Great lens. Sharp, distortion not that bad and if you have a Nikon with a drive pin in the body, you can get the older model lens very reasonably. I do work for some lawyers and when I go into a lock-up pen to photograph a wrecked car, the Tokina lets me take a full length broadside of the car from a relatively short distance away. This can be an issue when wrecked cars are parked closer than you would wish when you have to photograph them.

Just in case you're interested in the Tokina. I got mine from Tokina.

The Nikon AF-P 10-20mm has received good reviews as a DX formatted wide angle zoom. I heard it is constructed with a lot of plastic, but otherwise a good performer. The price is good too. Only $307. This lens is one of two I'm considering buying in the future. You will get a FOV of 15-30mm on a crop sensor. Not bad. Tokina has some good ones to consider. A little more expensive, with rugged construction.
