UPS/FedEx versus USPS deliveries

I just read a discussion on UHH and I want to add some helpful info. UPS and FedEx have delivery agreements with USPS. If you have a PO box, you can use your name and the post office street address plus your box # for delivery. The post office will process it the same as if it was addressed to your PO box. That way nothing sits on your porch for thieves. If you do a lot of On-line ordering or live in a high crime area, it may be worth your while to pay for a PO box as an alternative shipping address.

We use the same setup now. If the sender won't send to a PO box and wants a street address, we give them the street address of the post office and our PO number. No problems with items being stolen off our porch.

Other thoughts (after having packages stolen from my porch):

In my area, UPS has added a note to their system that every package that comes to my address must be signed for. If I am not home, they leave a note and come back two more times to attempt delivery. That, coupled with their delivery progress and status emails, make it easy to plan for their deliveries and never have a package sitting on the porch.

FedEx , when asked to do the same thing, pointed out that they were a local franchise and refused to do anything but leave a package on the porch. They won’t even ring the doorbell.

FedEx and UPS were thinking of merging. They considered calling the new company ***** FedUp.

My post office told me to use

My name
My street address
Box #
City, State
My Zip (same as post office)

This has solved all problems of needing a street address for my orders and everything ends up at my PO box.

I have the best anti porch theft defense. My 5 furry kids. No one comes near my yard without my early warning system. I wish i could hear as good as they can.

That’s odd, the FedEX driver(s) who work my neighborhood ALWAYS ring the doorbell ... no matter what time it is! I’ve been rudely awakened from my nap time many times.

I've had a PO BOX for years. Our local postmaster (perhaps other places do it also) Allows Box holders
to use the post office physical address, then I add a line says "Unit 123" (my box #) . The value of this is that it
solves the problem of many shippers who do not deliver to PO boxes. FedX and UPS just drop boxes
off at the PO address...
Another bonus is the PO installed a large number of keyed package Boxes. So, you get a key in your
small PO Box and without standing inline, can receive your package, even when the front desk is closed
after hours. A great system! Certified & things to sign for are still a line wait. However, the folks working
at my PO win a "BEAR FOOT" award every year for their super service. 99611 Kenai, Alaska :)

Don't understand that. FedEx offers the same agreement as UPS. Having worked for FedEx, I have to say that I never heard of them franchising anything out. It is probably someone they interline with. but they don't even do that very much anymore.

They do not franchise the service to USPS.
The Post office just lets box holders use the address
for delivery. Not much different than delivering to a
central location where the owners get the delivery
when they access the internal central receiver.

When you look a the fear of Door step thieves
and misdelieries this makes perfect sense.

Not to mention my being able to get orders that cannot
be sent to a PO BOX.

In my case I live out of Kenai where is is no mail service
and delivery of packages is difficult.

AND I email everytime I go by a postoffice with people
standing in line to pickup packages.

Hope this helps.

Same here... FedEx has never messed up with my deliveries! UPS has been excellent too!

UPS/FedEx drivers: always good, always personable. *BUT* don't always know that they can deliver to USPS. I get deliveries at home, office, and at the post office. Here's the key:

Your Name
USPS Street Address, then unit #xxx(your box number)
City State, etc.

IF you don't have an active box, USPS will not accept it. Don't try to get cute with this, as *all* of the carriers get a little pissy about this, and it might be quite a while before you get the item.

After the UPS/FedEx driver does it a few times, they know.

(Also, someone mentioned that FedEx does USPS transport. Yes, a lot of it - but not all.) (FedEx exclusively does transport USPS Express Mail) A lot is done by UPS as well.

Another interesting fact is that USPS does close to 20% of both FedEx and UPS deliveries ("smart post", "savers") for "the last mile". It is cheaper than doing it themselves by having USPS do it.
