The male would have the red extending from his bill down to his neck. The female only has red on the back of her head.

Hi mollymolly ... I found a picture (one of the few decent ones) that I took earlier this year. From your description this one appears to be a male?

You had better luck than I've had! Very nice shots. Maybe you could rent that woodpecker out?

Thanks RMM ... I would have to catch it first, and looking at it's beak and claws ... probably not.

Thank you very much for this info mollymolly ... it's great to find out that there is a potential "couple" hanging out nearby so we might to see more of them in the future.

There is a very good chance that these two could produce little ones. While this bird does not specifically 'mate for life', they are monogamous throughout the breeding season and the same pair have been know to mate for several seasons in a row.

By the way, I used to wonder why a Woodpecker would be pecking on things that were obviously the wrong 'material' for them, ie. telephone and light poles, metal eaves, pipes etc.. I found out that they choose these things so that the sound will reverberate better in hopes of calling a mate.

I know some heads they could practice on.
