I have been looking for a new monopod. If I had the dollars, I would probably get a Gitzo or RRS. Has anyone had experience with Feisol or Giotto carbon fiber monopods? And, in particular, is there a good reason to avoid either brand?

Most all of the carnon fiber monopods are quite good. The biggest differences are weight and price.
The Giottos is the heaviest of all due to its bulky hardware. RRS is about the priciest.
I personally use the Nest carbon fiber Pro monopod, great quality at low cost. Vanguard also makes some extremely nice ones in their Veo and Abeo lines.

Monopods are actually quite simple. Sturdy, stable, extendable, lightweight, tilt head....probably all you need. I have never been disappointed with Manfrotto products.

Look up the brand "Opteka" and make your selection -- These are reasonably priced and well built. AND don't pass up the opportunity to buy a gadget to hook-up your camera in order to have any angle you want, a small light one.

I have been looking at the ProMaster Professional convertible monopod (MPV432+). Often retails for ~ $80. It does not have a head but right now I favor trying out a Y-yoke. See https://www.amazon.com/Promaster-Professional-MPV432-Convertible-Monopod/dp/B01EGOXREQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519744737&sr=8-1&keywords=ProMaster+Professional+monopod and https://www.amazon.com/Hammers-attachment-Camera-monopod-shooting/dp/B005F0S29G/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1519744783&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=monopod+yoke Often retails for ~ $10. Ignore the prices at these links.

I'll second the Sirui P-204s, or better yet the Sirui P-424SR which is the unit I own. Very sturdy monopod with the removable feet that gives you some lateral stability the comes in very handy at times.

For me, what separates monopods is SPEED and ergonomics. The ones I use adjust from the TOP - like the manfro 685 neotek and go HIGH ( for birds or air-shows) like my fiberglass converted painter's poles.

Or, better yet my bodypod.

Poor guy, you will make a decision based on what? Why don't you just look up the information I sent or just stay in purgatory! LOL

I'll give a second vote for the Manfrotto Neotec. It doesn't collapse to a really short length but it's fast to extend or collapse (just pull up to extend, just squeeze the trigger to collaspe).

Sirui is nice for about $100. You can get good deals on eBay if you know what you are looking for and are patient. I got my heavy duty Gitzo for about half price on eBay. Depends on what you want and need though...

Best,
Todd Ferguson
