I'd be very inclined to get her a used, possibly refurbished, crop sensor camera that might both give her room for growth and still fit your budget.

I was dealing with this same thrilling possibility with a 7 year-old grandson several years ago. Finally, decided to quickly dig out an "old" Canon S5 IS point-n-shoot instead of buying one that my heart was telling me to do. So, I took him to several places where birds and flowers abound. I kept downloading his pix quickly. With all the activities youngsters have these days, I wanted to keep his photography eye in the mix. About six months later, I made him a frame so we could walk around at a park so he could handle it, or I could, so he would develop the composition idea without even knowing what that meant.

When he turned 9, all I got was "Where are we going next?" with cameras in hand. Well, the whole photography idea just exploded. I said, "Let's go out on the sand bar at low tide near Lewes, DE, and photograph gulls. As you can see in the progression of pix, he hasn't put that "old" point-n-shoot down, but I am dying to get him the real deal on birthday #11.

Sorry, if this seems about us... it's just a look at what may very well warm your heart in short order. So glad you have this opportunity.

Isn't he cute! You must be very prod of him. He looks as if he is taking his photography very seriously.

I have an 8 year old - and no matter how responsible they are, ugly things will happen to this camera. So my recommendation would be to get a water proof, drop proof camera. You can find many good new and used ones for under $100. I gave my son a Canon D10 - and if he leaves it outside in the rain or buried in the sand.... no big deal.

Here are some links of some good ones:

Hi Tami

I have been following this post and on your advice have purchased from EBay a Used Fuji XP50 for my Grandson who is 6 years. It comes with Memory card and charger and other bits, so you have saved me some money. I am looking forward to receiving it ready for his next visit at Easter, so thank you.

My 8 year old daughter is interested in photography (guess I am rubbing it off on everyone around me!). She has a good eye and I am guiding her on composition and lighting. She has been using an old iPhone lying around, but I want to get her a point and shoot camera for an upcoming vacation. My older dslrs would be too heavy and cumbersome for her (and I know me or my husband will end up carrying it in addition to mine!)
Can anyone suggest a starter camera, probably in the $90-125 range? Thanks in advance!!

Consider an entry level DSLR or mirrorless. It’s best she learn things she doesn’t have to unlearn.

If you want to get them hooked on photography, suggest one of the instant photo cameras that are popular with the kids these days. Most shoot a 3"x2" instant photo much like the old polaroid cameras and can be had for half of your budget. You can spend the rest on film packs. $100 will get you almost any brand with film brand new. Fujifilm Instax seems to be a decent choice.

My 5yr and my 8yr both use nikon d90 with a 50mm f/1.8 and the 5yr actually handles the camera better then his older brother. So she might be fine with one of your older ones. If you have time take her out for the day and let her use one and see how she does. I would just get a decent strap/harness for it.

Why not try some sort of a bridge camera like the Nikon p530. Much like a point-and-shoot with manual options. Yes you'll have to spring for a little bit more around $200 but It prepares people for DSL r cameras. Canon has some good Bridge cameras also. Just keep in mind most of the cheaper ones will not shoot in raw but they will get someone used to changing settings to take photos and getting better color
