I use a Tamron 28mm X 300mm. it is a faster focusing lens then the 18mm X 300mm.

Very nice write-up. You've got me thinking about looking for a good used EF-S 28-138mm IS USM to add to my lens stable. If anyone out there has one to sell let me know.

Sorry, I won't part with mine. You have made a wise decision if you aren't going with the 24-105L II IS f/4.

But the field of view is a limitation of the crop camera, not the lens. I would still expect it to be a much sharper lens than a non L lens on a crop camera.

AND the lens. 24mm is limiting on a crop factor camera, 104 is limiting on a full frame.

I use an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM as my carry around lens on my 7d. Works good for about every thing.

It should - a great lens - one of the Canon "holy trinity". Been thinking about selling my 24-105L and getting one - just hate to give up the IS and extra 35mm reach, but I'd love to have the extra stop.

Canon EF 24-105L IS. The MkII version if it fits your budget, the MKI if it doesn’t.

Exactly if in your budget. I have the MI version and love it.

I too wanted a 24-70, but I need 'IS' due to tremors and I got the Tamron version G2 with VC, f/2.8, the new one, and I absolutely love it! IMO this lens is as sharp as anything I have. These were shot with my new Canon 80D, hand held from about 8' away about 3 months ago. The lighting in the Visitors Center was horrendous.

I've been using the 7d for 5 years, I think, and although I purchased the 24-70 f/4 because it has a macro, or at least close-up, feature that is very nice, I miss the longer reach that the 24-105 would give me (and am considering buying it). For wide angle I have the 10-22 which I adore.

I recently purchased the 24-105 IS f/4 version II, and absolutely love it on my crop sensor bodies. I sold my 24-105 IS version I, which I had had for several years on eBay for $500 making the $1100 price tag somewhat manageable. It's a wonderful lens.

Oh thanks a lot! Now I'll probably have to buy it. What was wrong with version I?

Very nice, that is one reason I went with the 24-105 as I love IS from a previous lens and struggle when I have it missing on a lens.

Mine suffered from significant lens creep, which aggravated me to no end. The Version II has a barrel lock totally eliminating it. If you are happy skampy with Version I, don't buy II.

Some of the version 1s developed an internal ribbon cable issue that was expensive to have Canon repair. There were a zillion of these lenses sold, and probably only a small percentage developed the issue, but it is a known problem. i’ve had my version 1 for 4-5 years with no issue.
