I was gonna buy a Canon, then I looked at Nikon, Then I looked at the Canon, then I looked at the Nikon again. Then I looked at the Canon again. Once looking at them and holding them I made my decision. I'm happy with my decision and Ive since bought another camera from the same company.

I suggest you look at Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Fuji, or Sony as well.
Consider the trade between DSLR and mirrorless. For many uses, I prefer mirrorless because the shutter is quieter, and with some cameras using electronic shutter they are silent. Just listen to press conferences; it's hard to hear the speaker because of the mirror slap/shutter noise of DSLRs shooting in burst mode.
