Never buy a wide angle lens to "get it all in".

A wide angle is used to enhance perspective. This is a common beginners mistake. read this interesting article that is one of many :)

Good article. Thanks.

This beuatiful photo demonstrates the pros and cons of wide angle for sure. It captures the ambiance nicely, but does compress things down!

Colin, I think they are wonderful for landscape photos like this one. As much as any photograph, one has to decide what they want to show. If it's the village, then a different lens or viewpoint is required. If it's the splendor of the lake, as you've captured it, the 20mm is just fine.

I agree with what Bob said. The point of this shot is to show the sunset or sunrise over the lake. The tree on the left side is a great accent that you designed to provide perspective. If you wanted to show the village in the background, then make an attempt to bring up the shadow detail. Whatever there is of the village is lost in the dark shadows. If you overdo this, then it may be too distracting and take away from your subject, the sun.

Took this shot with my nikon 20mm 1.8 and as much as l like the photo what my eyes could see was the village of bowmore in some detail, but with the wide angle pushing everthing into the distance its pretty much lost.
I know 20mm is not to wide and there great for some shots ie beach shots with boulders in foreground , but i'm slowly going of this lens.
What's your thoughts on wide angle lenses.

I like your photo and your Whiskey!

Slightly off subject but thanks to catchlight for the outstanding article linked. It focused my thinking in using WA lenses better than anything I ever read

A wide angle is a great lens for its intended use.
As someone already stated, it is not for every situation. The picture you shared is a good one. You have to decide what you want to feature in your photo and then select the lens that will deliver the desired image.

First I think wide angle and which mm is a personal choice. It think we are
past a lot of distortion at this point. This has been a big question for me.
Think the answer is the situation.

I think I talked about this before business friend ask me to shoot a school
culture program they had no photographer on site. I used my Sony a6300 with 16 70 zeiss lens.
The 16mm was perfect for group shots with no flash and the corners not distorted much
great lens the group shots were great.

For my video I had no 35mm cine prime because I was thinking this would work.
Philip Bloom the famous video guy said he shot a demo story with the SLR Magic 35mm 1.2.
Here price wins a great lens from China for $299 from B&H. Cine lens are so expensive
this one is a gem. Here is a solution for video and I would use this lens for stills.

I have the crazy good bridge camera Sony RX10 III. Excellent lens 24mm to 600mm and
pretty good at all mm's even 600mm The 24mm is my favorite 2.4. I have a 24mm Rokinon
cine prime good lens but so so - this is where a great wide angle is usually very expensive.

I have said this before the AV company I owned years ago with slide shots computer programmed
we only used 35mm Nikon lens. If we sent a few shooters out 35mm lens. It had a dynamic but was
very realistic to the eye. I find with a 55mm 1.8 Zeiss a beautiful look but it does not include
everything want to visualize even full frame. Great bokeh. Sometimes to much.

The landscape shot is very good. It may not have enough information and dynamic range.
Where is the story? Good luck to a great photographer.

Use Lightroom, develop a correction profile for your lens and go. Crop out of the center of your image for less distortion. This is what a crop censor camera does.

My take on wide angle lenses is as follows. A wide angle lens puts emphasis in the foreground while the background is pushed away. It cannot be used "to get everything in" because used that way the results are not going to be very pleasant. The majority of them have lots of distortions and the majority of those can be controlled by shooting straight into the target if possible at the same level. Objects at the corner of the frame will show distortion.
Wide angles are an excellent tool for landscapes but the operator needs to know their limitations and how to use them. They are not very good to photograph people because of the distortions. Regarding distortions they do better at the center than near the corner.
For a wide vista like your photograph it has proven its value. Other lenses will fit the subject you had in mind better.
Do not give up on your lens yet, simply learn how to use it to your advantage.

I have a 24 on my FF and it has been on there so long it's probably rusted in place.

I personally do not see any issues with the 20mm 1.8 image you produced, although I do not know what you were attempting to accomplish either, so Nice Photo!

I think your wide angle image looks fine, but you can get the “panoramic “ look with a more closeup view of details by taking a series of overlapping “zoomed” shots and stitching them together to create a wide angle view. You must use a well leveled tripod for this technique. Most of the better photo editors will do the stitching quite well. I have used Lightroom and Photoshop Elements for this.
