Windows 10 problem

Windows 10 no longer recognizes my external DVD player when plugged into either my desktop or laptop computer that run win10, but works fine on my old laptop running win7. When I plug it in the computer chimes like it's suppose to but that's all. File explorer does not show anything plugged into the port. All my other external devices (external hard drive, card reader, thumb drive) all show up when I plug them into the same port. The DVD player is made by LG. I went to the support page on their website to make sure I have the latest driver, but no drivers were listed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing to try is to restart the computer.

Another great win 10 update

Go to LG website and download software
Try another usb port.
Check device manager

It is so great when software locks out your favorite devices.

This happened to me with a usb microscope.
Pain to fix.

The checked the device manager and it says driver error. So I went to the LG website again and this is what I found.

My GE24NU40 isn't working properly, could it be the drivers?

The short answer is no. Plug-and-Play devices will not gain functionality with different drivers.

Read through the tips below to look for possible solutions.

Disc Drives:

Disc drive issues depend on which function of the drive isn't working properly.

If the drive is recognized, but doesn't play discs:
You are most likely in need of software. Some newer versions of Windows were released without a DVD playback app pre-installed.
All computers require special software for Blu-ray playback.

If the drive is recognized and plays discs, but doesn't burn discs:
The writing laser may be the issue in this case, and may need to be replaced.

If the drive is not recognized:
The issue may be with the physical connection, an issue within the operating system, or a hardware issue with the computer or the drive.

Since I've already ruled out the physical connection and the hardware the problem must be with the OS.

Since you say 'Windows 10 no longer recognizes. . .' I'll assume that until recently it did recognize the drive, therefore, I'll suggest going back to a restore point before a recent Win10 upgrade.

Or, have you tried swapping the cable between the computer & the external drive?

Good luck!

Sounds weird but, since it doesn’t work now, try going to device manager, delete the USB PORTS, then restart Windows. Plug the device in then, and call me in the morning. This really should work, as the system will see the device, and reload drivers automagically.

I would go to start & device manager. Then choose the DVD/CD-ROM drives, pick the problem drive, then driver, then update driver. Follow the directions and then reboot. If that doesn’t work, go though the same procedure, then choose uninstall instead of update driver. Then reboot and let your computer find and install the drive.

An excellent short-term solution, but eventually you’ll have to deal with the root cause, or it will just happen again the next time Windows installs an update if that was the cause (unless you disable updates, which is not a good idea).

I appreciate everybody's suggestions to help fix my problem, unfortunately none of them have cured the problem.

The first thing I did after installing Win 10 64 bit pro was create a restore point and then disable all updates. It's been more than 2 years and I never get updates and have never had a problem.

The restore points are a great idea, BUT turning off the updates isn’t. All fine and well until you miss an important update that addresses a new virus, bot or attack definition that was included in the updates you missed. Best professional practice is to keep all SW, including OS, up-to-date with the latest patches. You may wish to wait a few months after release to make sure it isn’t buggy, but with new vulnerabilities discovered regularly (such as the latest Intel processor vulnerability), it’s just smart. You can certainly prevent them from automatically installing and do it on your own schedule, but it is not good advice to ignore them. Of course, if you never connect to the Internet...
