I was in the market for a mirrorless camera, and settled on the Canon M5, I can use my EF and EF-s lenses with an adaptor. I went to the website of the local camera store, but I could not find that model. Thinking that it must be an omission, I called the store. No, they did not stock that camera, but call back in several days to see if they could get one from Canon. So I went to the local Big Buy, expecting to be disappointed. I could not find the M5, until a sales person showed me the camera, it was on a very prominent display. I was equally amazed how much he knew about camera equipment. He explained how the camera worked, went through the menu's, put a memory card in the camera, invited me to take as many shots as I wanted. I found this Best Buy very well stocked with different equipment, and with a sales person who made the sale at the same price as B&H.

I was in Best Buy yesterday and was as usual prepared to be disappointed with their Camera Department,,,,Low and Behold they had an almost complete Nikon Line up including the D850 and D500 and less expensive Camera Models and Lenses,,,,an almost complete Canon Line up including the 5D Mark IV and 7D Mark II and less expensive Camera Models and Lenses,,,an almost complete Sony Line up including the new Sony A7RIII and A7RII and less expensive Cameras and Lenses, an almost complete Panasonic Line up including the GH5 and less expensive Camera Models and Lenses,,,an almost complete Olympus Line up including the OMD 1 Mark II and less expensive Camera Models and Lenses and I did not see the Fuji XT2 but did see the Fuji XT20 and Lenses,,,they also had Bridge Cameras and Point and Shoots,,,the Salesperson I talked to knew Photography and said they would match any Price from B & H or Amazon or Adorama etc...and could order anything I wanted as their Lens Selection was not the most complete,,,,I was really shocked,,,,will still support my local Camera Stores and B & H and Adorama and KEH Camera but the Competition is getting more intense all the time....I also am a Costco Member but last time I looked they did not carry the high end stuff.....

I'd read Best Buy was going to expand their camera selection some time ago. But I never have seen it. Not sure which stores in my area are the photo center ones. Might be nice to at least look at. Also the closest Best Buy to me closed, weird. But they kinda sucked from day one on everything so I usually drove a bit further to a different one. But I don't think they have a large selection there either. But then there is Best Buy Online. But since I use Pentax big box stores don't carry it so for new I go to B&H, Adorama, or Amazon. For used Amazon, eBay, Adorama, B&H, and even The Ugly Hedgehog. I sometimes look at the new Canon and Nikon DSLRs at Costco, just to look.

I'm a regular at my nearby Best Buy. After reading your post I'm inclined to think today is April 1.

That also describes the Best Buys in NYC, my favorite one in Union Square...but they have yet to display a D850... stiff competition from B&H and Adorama in this town (and maybe Willoughbys which caters to the upper echelons). I sometimes buy accessories at BB, but cameras/lenses at BH.

There's a Best Buy like that here in Rochester, NY. There's a whole line up of Nikons, Olympus, Panasonic, Sony, Canon etc with lenses on you can just pick up and test at your own leisure.

I was able to pick up a Fuji X-T2 camera from Best Buy (Salem Oregon) within 3 hours when my usual stores had it backordered. They didn't have it on display though. And a Nikon D7500 within the same time frame. No idea where they got them from- maybe Portland. And Best Buy offers 12-18 months free financing but woe to you if you don't get it paid within that time because their back finance charges are exorbitant. There is one Best Buy store in Tucson that has decent stock.

One camera store in particular I was sad to hear go out of business was Ritz Camera, at least the one located in Pittsburgh in the South Hills Village Mall. I always made it a point to go there and browse around, the sales staff was always eager to talk about cameras.

That’s very sad about Ritz Camera in the South Hills Village Mall. It was there for a long time. I grew up in Mt Lebanon and remember it well. I also remember when South Hills Village Mall was built .....

When I was shopping for my Canon 5D Mark IV, I visited the Best Buy in Cool Springs/Frankin, TN. They were well stocked and had knowledgeable people and answered all my questions. Seemed very helpful.

There is a Best Buy close buy and the camera department has always been quite large and busy. Yes they seem to have all the big movers - Canon, Nikon, Olympus. Bodies and quite a few lenses, lots of bridge cameras, flashes, bags, tripods. A good place to let off some of that GAS. Prices??? Perhaps they are not the lowest, but they are close.

Be aware that if you decide to return an item for a refund, BB policy is to make you wait for a check from their headquarters for anything over $99.

My Best Buy in Salem NH also transformed from a moth to a butterfly. Although you MIGHT find someone who knows about the products they're selling, With employee turnover it's hit and miss. A well stocked Best Buy does however give you the opportunity to not only see a camera but to hold it and see how it feels in your hands.

I remember that Ritz Camera at the then rather new South Hills Mall well. We would get our darkroom chemicals there as well as film, paper and related stuff. Sad that these REAL camera stores are things of the past. I really miss just LOOKING at all the stuff, getting a bad GAS attack and then going home empty.

But only in some stores. In West Hartford, CT they have an excellent display with somewhat knowledgeable sales people. In Newington, CT, just a few point and shoot Compact camera’s, comparable to a local Walmart, with a staff whose primary focus is on selling you an extended warranty.

Yes, but ask the camera department employee for any information about photography that isn't in the camera brochure and he/she is completely lost. They get a (probably) 3 hour online course on selling points of different cameras and that make them an expert. I was in the local Best Buy a few days ago and they were hosting a photography class. The teacher was the photo department manager and, basically, all he was doing was touting the pluses of his inventory. He had no clue about adjusting exposure etc. His solution to shooting into the sun was, WHY would ANYONE be that stupid? I bought my usb memory card reader and left the store reminded why I ONLY use them for things I need quickly and don't want to wait on it to come from Adorama, B&H and others.
