Political press conferences *really are* full of photographers using dSLRs in continuous shutter modes. I’ve been to several.

The sound you hear on TV and radio is very heavily compressed, using exotic, multi-band compressors like the Orban OptiMod.

https://daleproaudio.com/products/orban-6300-optimod-broadcast-digital-audio-processor?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=googlepla&variant=37758884369&keyword=&gclid=Cj0KCQiA5aTUBRC2ARIsAPoPJk_aKs0iQ5BNGgnFtOkFxECOBbnT5GWjrTNGE9S5OdiT6FQ9XvNjRG4aAiPPEALw_wcB

This processing squashes the dynamic range of the original sound from around 90 decibels to about 15 dB or less. (It makes soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer.)

So the background noise gets sucked UP, the podium mic gets leveled, and the resulting mix is mush!
Political press conferences *really are* full of p... (show quote)

Here`s the Valid Explanation !!

I was watching the coverage of President Trump in Florida today and almost could not hear what was being said over the incessant loud clattering of the cameras. One would think that since almost all cameras in use today are digital, it would be possible to create an electronic shutter that was noiseless.

I’ve never noticed any shutter noise or mirror slap in my rig. 🤔

...makes me wonder, if with some attention to the *sound* part of the event, most of that clatter could be eliminated?

pretty much it has been done but then you have the no mirror cameras. The flap you hear is that mirror slapping up and then down. the new ones aren't as accepted yet but are just beginning to come into their own with interchangeable lenses ebcoming available ..til then the mirror slap gets louder as the camera ages.... i turn the bells and whistles off on mine but my nikon still slaps that mirror unless you put it in video mode set up for stills which changes your settings to video mode settings.

Because autofocus is much slower in that setup...

I think most mirrorless have an electronic noiseless shutter option. I know fuji does.

Most of those cameras have mirrors and will always make that "incessant loud clattering". Until the press write off those extremely expensive cameras mirrored cameras and go to mirrorless, we will always hear that "incessant loud clattering".

Or until the White House bans dSLRs...

I kind of like that noise - or better, sound. The more clatter the more important the news. Also the sound of the motor drives (still use 'em) adds to the effect. Yes it must be the mirror flipping that is the main source. I had a real nice Canon QL-17 many years ago with a leaf shutter that was VERY quiet. I miss that little rangefinder.
