Thanks , I think I have made the decision to stick with the d500. There is a line between needs and wants . The 500 is alot more then I need.

When in doubt, wait it out! They'll be there when you're comfortable with your decision! Good luck!

I see because you have a need. I went without camera for a long time because I didn't have a need and still don't have a need right now. I bought camera because I want not need.

Yes you are right but is the price of the base price of the 850 and 500 $1000?

Thanks for letting us know what you decided.

Too many folks ask questions like yours and never return to the thread.

Hi, was just looking for some input from the forum. I have a nikon d200 since 2003. I am saving up for a d500 and almost there. Was thinking of maybe switching to a full frame. Would anyone be able to help on that decision? I am a amateur photographer, that also am the photographer for all my daughters high school marching band tournaments . The d500 has the same footprint as my d200 so it would make a easy transition into. Also want some video options. But since I'm spending that much money why not spend a few dollars more and have the best of both worlds. Any thoughts?

D500 doesn't score especially well on DxOMark's "sports" scoring, which measures low light performance. If that is important, the D750 might be a better choice.

"There is a line between needs and wants." And several thousand dollars. Enjoy your new D500.

Tough choice. The D500 is a great camera, so getting a FF that is as good or better would be a pricey purchase.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

The D500 is probably the best overall Crop camera at this time. But if there is no difference then why is Jeff Cable shooting the Olympics with only full frame cameras... Bottom line is every camera is a compromise and I would hope that the OP has studied and learned enough to understand why a certain camera solution is being chosen. You are in many ways not just buying into a camera, but also into the lenses and camera system. Of course you can always change or grow in a different direction in the future. But it may cost you some money to change directions.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

Getting a FF camera is not the best of both worlds. You lose something for using the FF camera vs the crop camera. But if that the OP meant then by all mean buy it. If I want it I either buy it or buy nothing. I wouldn't settle for something less. I settled for no camera for almost 20 years but not settle for camera I don't want.

With the new DX lenses available I don't see any reason to shoot full frame. I've had many Nikon digital cameras over the years (including the D100, D300 D3, and D4s) and I'll put the d500 up against any of them. the D500 image quality is nearly the same as the D4. In fact I bought the D500 as an upgrade to my D7200 and liked it so much I sold my D4 2 weeks later. You can pair the D500 with the Nikon 16-80 and get wide angle images just as sharp as you will from full frame. I've been shooting digital since it started and film before that and i generally shoot over 10.000 images per year

I was a full frame snob at one point as well, but the D500 opened my eyes. The crop factor is a big advantage over full frame when shooting skittish subjects. It is smaller and lighter so it is more portable, a nice factor if you walk around with the camera looking for shots or wildlife. The D500 is slightly noisier than the D4 but is is also sharper because it has no anti aliasing filter.

My advice would be to buy the D500 unless you need more resolution, which shouldn't be necessary unless you're a professional photographer. The D500 is more camera than any amateur needs.

Sounds like a reasonable decision to me. It may come as a surprise to many here, but there are other things in life to spend money on besides cameras! Ha! Enjoy!

Many believe that the D500 is the best dslr on the planet... I have a Sony a7, Nikon d700 and a d300, and a Samsung NX 30. They all take great pictures, but I still lust for an a7RII, and a D3... but with my current financial situation it ain't happening...

The D700 is practically the same as the D3 but lighter, smaller, and is self cleaning.

Thank you for that very nice reply . I started with a cannon ae-1 back when I was 16 yrs old loved taking pictures then and still do. Used the ae1 all the way up to 2001 until I got the d200 that I still use to this day. The reason I picked the d500 is the quality, how close the d500 is to the d200 and the video. I am always shooting but at the moment mostly my daughter who is in the marching band. I have come to a decision after this post that the d500 will be alot more then I need . The d850 would be nice but in many ways it just will not be good for me at this point of my life . I feel the 45 mega pix. Is and the price and speed in the deciding factor for me. I enjoyed and appreciate all that the forum does for all of us thank you.
