My Canon 6d does not have a built-in flash. I only have a 430 EX II and a 270 speedlite. Does anyone know if the 270 can be used on the 6d as a master to the 430 EX as a slave? Thanks in advance.
Nothing that I read on them indicates either of them are capable of being a master. I do not have a 270, but I do own the 430 EXll. I ended up purchasing a Yongnuo YN568EXll which is capable of acting as a master.
I like it a lot and for slightly less than $100, I felt it was a good value.

Thank you. I've been looking at those speedlites!

Just look in your spec sheet, or the manual!
In the Optical slave mode, YES. A much better option is radio triggers.

I don't think either of those flash units can be masters. I would suggest one of the most inexpensive options and one that moves forward with time is to purchase the Yongnuo YN600EX=RT, it is the same (a clone) as the Canon 600EX-RT.
It will function as a master in both radio transmission mode and optical mode, you would use it in optical mode to trigger your flashes. I have the Canon 600EX-RT and the Yongnuo trigger YN-E3-RT and then added a Yongnuo YN600EX-RT when they became available. That flash was $150 CDN compared to $600 for the Canon flash.
I have had excellent results with all three, they talk together just fine. I have used them in optical mode with a couple or 430 (version 1) and again worked perfectly.

Thank you. I've just ordered a YN 685 with TTL wireless flash controller. Hope it works. I don't do a lot of flash photography but maybe I will now.

Hi Nat
I am not sure but I don't think the YN 685 works as a master to fire those other two flashes you have. I thought you wanted one that could be the master and would fire the other flashes??

It comes with a flash controller that I assume goes on the camera hot shoe. I'm really new to all this, so I may be totally disappointed. But I can send them back to B&H if necessary. Probably should have called and talked to one of their experts.
