Not sure why you would be looking for deductions. If you paid the tax in the other state (and lets assume it is the same rate as your home state) you might well be looking for deductions but only to cough up the same amount to your home state. Either way you pay the same amount BUT look at the amount of work involved. This is if you were really concerned about keeping everything exactly legal. If you took the easy way out and paid the tax in the source state and then did nothing else (because you pay the same either way) then the wrong coffer gets the cash. I am pretty sure that there is some way the average taxpayer does this that generally keeps his conscience clear but it ain't correct. The amount of money could be considerable if it was a large company in the same situation, say a mining company just across the border where it was 12 miles to the store but 80 miles and a difficult drive to a store on the same side of the border.
This is an extreme case but none-the-less quite possible and the principles are the same as buying from B&H but maybe the scale could be a lot bigger.

I think he was saying if you are organized enough to keep track of deductions, you can just keep your sales receipts in the same files and add them up when you do your taxes.

So to keep your own butt covered are you suggesting that you need to keep every single receipt for every single purchase for at least a 5 year period ? At least for items purchased out of state ? This would become a mammoth task the closer you lived to the borders with a number of larger towns in the vicinity.

Generally taxes are only auditable for 3 years from the filing date. Your state could vary. I prefer to pay the taxes at the point of purchase and be done with it.

I was referring to any deduction you may have on your income tax. That could include doctor bills, business mileage, etc. My point was it is not that difficult to keep track of things. I mention income tax because some states that also have income tax include a form for sales tax submission.

I can see it now - where is the receipt for the pot of jam I bought last September because I need to claim back the 8c sales tax I paid there but front up with 9c sales tax to my own state. Don't like jam ? Substitute 8GB flash card instead. Because if you don't then technically you are breaking the law.

Or you pay the 8c and call it quits. Except it goes into the wrong coffer. Or is this an acceptable to deal with the problem ?

Not quite. States vary with some saying if you paid the local tax rate at the point of purchase, you are done (Ohio for instance). Other states say if you paid, to use your numbers, 8% at the point of sale, but our rate is 9%, then you must pay us the 1% difference (Indiana for instance). I am not aware of any state that demands you get a refund from the state(s) where you paid taxes then pay your state their full rate.

Okay then it is generally acceptable to pay a single states tax as long as some state gets paid. And to be technical correct if there is a variance then the extra (if that is the way it goes) must come back to your home state ?
I would venture to say that this must make approx 323,000,000 of you guilty, technically at some level, of sales tax evasion ! Probably not deliberately although from reading on here not so sure. Unless you never travel out of state and never buy anything online, and I am sure there will be some, then I don't see how you can escape breaking the law to some degree even if not intentionally (and remember ignorance is meant to be no excuse).

Yeah, got letter for this year purchases also. There must be a dollar criterion somewhere because no letter in previous year although had purchases then, but no letter regarding. Sorry this is happening. Have used Adorama but get more consistently honest deals and better shipping from BH. Perhaps BH is getting the point of the spear because they bill themselves as the largest non-chain camera store in the world.
Problem with local stores is Denver is---face it--- the bush leagues and evidently can't support full stock stores like in Chicago, LA, and NY. So we're stuck going to someone else somewhere when local stores don't carry an item. Try another out of state seller. Of course, locals can order stuff and while they charge tax, they may not charge shipping.

Yeah. I live in Ohio and a couple years ago bought a watch in Indiana. They wanted to courier it to save taxes. I just paid for it and took it with me after paying the taxes which were the same rate as at home. No bookkeeping to do or forget.

Wow!

That was big time illegal on their part and would have involved you in a felony, which structuring a transaction for the purpose of avoiding tax is.

Oh how I love to see crybabies crying that they are forced to comply with the tax laws. If you want cameras to be exempt
lobby for it with your state legislators, if any of them can read. And don't complain when your State has no schools, or hospitals,
or roads. If you are relying on the current Federal Government to keep up your infrastructures, lotsa luck with that. Unless you
live within putting distance of Mar A Lago.
