Can someone explain to me what the name of this part is and what it is for that sets in between the gimbal head and the Trypod in this image? Is it just a Risor or spacer or something?

Looks like an adapter to convert from the Gimbal head to the tripod.
Most Gimbal heads you do not need an adapter.

I would agree that this could be a risor. I have thought of some thing like this, when you are shooting some thing that is about seventy or eighty degrees above the horizon you have to bend down to see through the view finder.

It's a thing. It's the thing you put there.

I suspect that the thread on the gimbal mount is a different size than the standard 1/4" on the tripod head. I may just be an adapter that makes the one size fit the other with a stable platform in between.

The tripod appears older and probably has a 1/4 20 thread, the gimbal has a European thread which is larger than the 1/4 20 thread. It could be an adapter to allow the gimbal head to be used on this older tripod. Personally I would not use any extension of any kind, it allows play within the tripod, never a good thing. You can also purchase an adapter that screws into the European thread allowing you to mount it directly to the tripod.

It's a thermal transference device, or heat sink. This dissipates the heat generated by the bearings while wildly swinging the camera to and fro and up and down while trying to track an erratically flying bird.

Duh! It's the Roman numeral II showing that this is a revised gimbal mount.

Checking the photo of the adaptor, it appears that the tripod screws are 3/8s on the upper portion and 1/4 on the lower. Probably much stronger and more elegant than the 2$ bushing. Definitely more elegant looking! Undoubtably more expensive!

That's funny, that's the one i was looking at, gimbal head i mean. That part in between i think is just an adaptor for gimbal head to Quarter inch trypod screw. I'm thinking about purchasing this gimbal because its cheap like me, plus it says it has a bearing on the verticle adjustment, most other cheap ones don't.
