I've seen mallies, I would love a Malinois. Smart, brave, crazy. They go bananas if you don't keep them busy. They are not going to like cooling their heels waiting for you to adjust your shutter speed. The police and seal teams are the best places for them. Most dogs instincts are to run when threatened. Mals don't get that. Threat means no hesitation and bite. They are said to bite through their fear. If you're a Mal owner and put in the hard work, exercise and training, that another thing. Don't need to tell you.

It's late, an hour after sunset, and I'm hiking down a narrow trail back to the parking lot. Lots of good shots but I am the only one left (I hope). I have several thousand dollars worth of gear on my back, really wishing I had a German Shepherd by my side right now.....

Any suggestions based on your experience?

We raise puppies for The Seeing Eye (8 so far). We raise them according to strict rules and never use treats for this. They respond amazingly just to praise! At around 15-16 months they go back to The Seeing Eye for training as guide dogs by a qualified trainer. The Seeing Eye uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Lab/Golden mixes. They are robust, learn very well and are eager to please their master. The Shepherds learn fast, but seem to develop health issues more often than Labs and Goldens. We prefer the Lab/Golden mix and have raised four of them.

German Shepherd... started with 2 & have 4 currently... (foster for a local German Shepherd Rescue) they keep me in sight at all times... As a woman photographing alone, they give me tremendous piece of mind... I can concentrate on my photography & not worry about being surprised by anything or anyone... they've got my back!

A dog that is more interested in keeping an eye on you than in wandering off. I have a dog (part German Shepherd but he looks more like a Heeler) who always keeps himself a certain distance from me, usually slightly uphill, when I am taking photos. Herding breeds tend to watch over you like that.

German Shepherd. Loyal, intelligent and a good deterent for animals of all types, human and otherwise.

I’d second that, I’ve had several breeds of dogs, but the German Shepherd is my favorite. Can always put a saddle pack on them to help carry gear.

Just for the record, "rescues" come from many sources. I have 3 and their all grateful as hell.

Jack Russell whose owner was gifted by her son and was going to send her to a shelter.
Very sick malnourished chihuahua purchased from a backyard breeder.
Poodle mix scheduled for next-day execution when he was flown to Oregon by a rescue org.

Doesn't matter how your paths crossed, just that theyhe'll.

Any dog that is well mannered and non-aggressive. You do not want a dog that might tear into a passerby or run off. I agree with a shelter dog that finds you. I have two that "found" us and they are the best friends ever. However, their temperaments (Chihuahua & Jack Russell mix) are not suited for photo companions off property. A dalmatian is a horrible choice! Super hyper and virtually most hard to train. Same goes for Shih Tzus. Had both. They were insane. Every "goldie" I have seen has been a perfect dog. They are children tolerant. The Shepherds are hit and miss as are Rottweilers and Dobermans. Just my 2 cents or maybe 3.
