Your Nikon will be happier with the Nikon Nikkor 70-300. Why?
It ensures optical quality throughout the range through the use of one extra-low dispersion element and a Super Integrated Coating. Assisting with operation of the lens is a pulse stepping motor AF system, with full-time manual focus override and an internal focus design, which works in tandem with Vibration Reduction image stabilization to produce tack sharp photos and video.

I second this, though the Tammy is a scoash faster at the low end either should be fine for good lighting conditions outdoors, not so much indoors without really adequate lighting or flash.

I have and use the old version of the 70-300 VR. The performance on my cameras is flawless.
I favor the camera manufacturer lenses. They are specifically made for their cameras.

Native lenses tend to be the most reliable for autofocus since third party has to reverse engineer since they aren't generally shared by the OEM.

I would choose the lens made by the manufacturer of the body since I believe it is engineered to perform on the body. Having said that, I know Tamron is producing some great stuff these days and I really cannot compare it to my 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR because I have not ever used the Tamron. You could rent both and compare what works best for you or look on some of the many sites Jerry often recommends. Good luck in your choice. I am pretty sure that if you ever choose to sell the lens, the Nikon will likely hold it’s value better.

I had both lenses for a couple of months until I had an accident and the Nikon hit the ground giving it a super soft focus look. I did a direct comparison with them before the accident, trying to figure out which one to keep. With my copies I have to give sharpness edge to the Tamron, it performs better than I thought it would and the stabilization is better on the Tamron.

You are probably referring to the Nikon AF-S lens. If you want a Nikon lens that is sharp at the long end then I would suggest looking at the AF-P 70-300, a newer lens introduced recently. Also sharp across the entire range, it is more expensive than the AF-S 70-300. I have the lens with which I am extremely pleased.

He didn’t say whether or not his 70-300 was the “AF-P” version. If it’s the regular AF-S version, the one that sells for about $500, then it has the “Silent Wave” motor, not the “Pulse” motor.

Have you consider the Nikon 70-300 P lens?
