Newbie, Scanning questions

My Father was an avid photographer, but my interest has always been secondary - really do not have many (if any!) creative genes...
My primary interest here is in getting help with scanning slides, negatives and photographs, as my wife and I each have tons from parents and other family. I have gotten an Epson V550 flatbed and started scanning, but am wondering if there is any really good software out there. The Epson comes with what is probably adequate, but, IMHO, not really user-friendly and intuitive. My biggest chore is getting things set up so my wife can scan!
Any thoughts/suggestions/recommendations of third-party software out there?

I've been using Silverfast for the last, probably, 10 years. It has some really nice features. I'm still actively involved with photographing using film and I do like the Silverfast works.

Silverfast and Vuescan are both very popular, and each has passionate advocates. I've tried both, and use Vuescan regularly. I prefer it to the Epson basic software.

I don't know about the Epson software but I didn't like Vuescan. Slides scanning is easy. I always scan either slides or negatives in manual mode. I don't use the software automatic exposure and color balancing. If you want to set the scanner up for scanning negatives without user adjustment then it's not going to be good. Scanning negatives is like converting the RAW file, you can't use the same settings for all of them and you must use your judgment for each of the negatives.

Hi Gene,
The "best" is Silverfast Ai... but it's expensive (if it's not "bundled" with the scanner... I know it's included with some Epson flatbeds). Silverfast comes in many different versions, each specific to particular scanners (i.e., it's not a "universal" type of software).
Second best and a lot more affordable is Vuescan. It works with many different scanners, but isn't nearly as sophisticated as Silverfast.
