I am considering buying Leica V-Lux (type 114). I like two things: 1. Seems to be light weight and 2. 25-400mm f/2.8-4.0 zoom lens. If anyone has this camera please let me know how you like it and is it worth buying.

Something you may not know. Panasonic makes the V-Lux for Leica and they have their competing model.

Yes you save $$$$ and they both have that great Leica lens.

My sister tells me, as an owner, the only difference is warranty. The Leica has international warranty and the Pano US only. Same product. She has the Leica due to her travels. Big difference in price. Do not know if she is 100% accurate but worth checking into. Good luck.

I have owned the Leica V-Lux 4 for almost 4 years. It a 25-600mm Eqivalent, 24x Zoom Lens. It’s only got a 12.1MP sensor. I think it’s a great travel camera because it is so light and yet so versatile. The only negative I have found is that it is slow to refocus moving objects, ie. surfers & birds! Oh, and yes I paid a lot extra for that red dot!
My recommendation is to go for it! You won’t be sorry.

I had the Panasonic LZ1000. Very nice travel camera, when I bought mine the only difference was the warranty and I think the Leica purchaser got a copy of lightroom. My travel camera these days is a Sony rx10iii, the zoom is out to 600mm which is great for me as I do some birding and it has stronger auto focusing, for me those things were worth the extra $$.

I have a Leica V-Luz 114; I like it and recently tested it by comparing it to my Nikon D700 w/1.5 telextender with my 300mm f2.8. The Leica has better definition at 800mm. The V-Lux is light weight and the zoom extents beyond the 400mm in "P" mode to 800, then to 1600 by interpolation and thats noticeable. I recommend staying between the 25mm to 800mm. The only problem with the V-Lux is that it has so many capabilities that its mind boggling ! I know only 1/10th of its capacity and that works for me. I shoot architectural details in old buildings and doing a story on The Traffic on the Hudson River from my living room window.

Another thought; I also have a Leica D-Lux 4. When compared to the Panasonic copy, the Leica's program has much less 'barrel distortion' in wide angle mode. You're also paying more for a better Leica program inside the camera.

Thanks for all the input. I think I am leaning towards Sony RX10 IV. I have Sony A7R and like it, but I do not want to add heavy zoom lenses to it, one camera with long reach I think will be better for me.

Sony RX10 IV Might be a good choice; Zeiss lenses are great. The Sony has the same zoom range as the Leica, but little more in price.
