It sounds like the camera is refocusing when you hit the shutter button or sutter release.
I have a D7200 and a D750 and they both have slightly different setups.
If the D7100 is like the D7200 (I suspect it is) you need to do this:
C1(shutter -release button AE-L) set to Off
F4 (Assign AE-L/AF-L) AF-ON
Also remember to set your camera to Continuos focus mode.
The D750 does it all in one modification in the custom setup menu.

That's due to the auto shut-off timer built in to the camera. Simply turn auto focus off after achieving focus, with camera in manual mode. Than take as many shots as you want.

I have the D7100 and use BBF all the time and have never experienced anything like what you are dealing with. I would go through the complete set up procedure for BBF and see if the problem goes away. Very strange good luck with finding a cure.

I have a Nikon D7100 that has been setup for BBF.

I've check Steve Perrys book, the internet and a few other sources as to the setup. Checked & Rechecked.
Setup: Camera in on tripod with a static item to shoot. Lighting is OK. Using a remote release to trigger shutter.

I'll compose the picture, use BBF to focus, check exposure and fire off a shot with the remote.
I can take several photos without a problem. Let the camera set idle for 20 sec. press the remote and the camera will loss focus. It does not try to refocus, it losses focus.
Press BBF again and everything works normal until the camera sets idle for a few seconds.

I've tried this with and without the remote trigger. Tried different lenses. Same results.

Is this normal?

I've tried finding the answer on the internet and in books with no luck.

thanks, Ya'll are the best

Did you attempt BBF without the Shutter release cable? Maybe it is a faulty shutter release cable. Vello is a generic brand, maybe you need a Nikon or Canon or Sony or etc. Shutter release cable, according to camera brand you own.

ALL Nikons go to sleep when they sit idle. Half press the shutter button to wake the camera up...........

Here's a thought, as the logical ones seem to have been covered so far ......................

Could this have something to do with VR? Are you using lenses with VR and do you have this turned off whilst shooting from a tripod?
