A few from yesterday's conference championship tournament. Canon 5D3 with EF 135 f2L, some with 1.4 EX Canon MKII Extender. Typically 1/500, f2.8, ISO 6400-12,800.

Thank you. It adds important continuity to the thread, with real world examples. Much appreciated!

Thanks for posting your shots. Looks like some great wrestling action. You managed to capture it well in what looks like challenging lighting conditions.

Thank you Peter and Chris for looking. Yes, indoor gym lighting is always challenging - no flash allowed and ISO 6,400 to 12,800 is the order of the day. Took about 400 exposures and editing them down to 20 took all afternoon - I have GOT to streamline my workflow before next season! Btw, my son’s comments were that I crop too tightly 😂 (and he may be right - just my style).

As to cropping, that is an aesthetic decision. The backgrounds are very busy and potentially distracting in most of the shots posted, so personally I prefer the tight crops.

I can tell you that MaxPreps.com, the premier high school online site in the country only wants shots that are real tight in camera. After shooting that way for a while it does make a difference. Thanks

Nice shots. If I might make a suggestions for next time. No backs and no butts. Good work.

You’ve just identified the biggest challange with shooting wrestling 😫. I completely agree (and thanks), and that is to get faces in the shots - only about 5-10% of wrestling shots actually have faces - the other 90+% are “backs and butts”. No matter which side of the ring you shoot from, they’re looking the other way. I usually don’t include any that don’t show faces, but I did this time because I wanted to include some of the ”aerial shots”. Thanks for looking and useful comment.

This is an interesting discussion. Backs and butts may be useful in certain circumstances, especially showing motion, but faces show emotion better in my opinion as a simple observer.

What is the objective or the exercise?
