I have a Rebel XTi and am thinking of upgrading and getting more into photography since retiring. I am looking at the Rebel T7i which would be a significant upgrade but still an entry level camera, and the Canon 80 D. I don’t have any thoughts of being a pro and mainly would be using the camera for vacation travels, family photos, and photos of landscapes and wildlife while hiking. Which of these would you recommend and is the 80D advanced enough to warrant the extra cost?

The 80D is advanced enough to be worth it and it is more durable in construction.
If your budget allows for the 80D without pain do it.
If not the T7i is no slouch in performance.
I have an old 10D, first of the series, and it is still working away just fine and is well built. Only failure was a mirror coming loose from the frame after many years of hard use on job sites and vacations. It is still in use.
The 80D should provide the same if not better durability and the DPAF with either will astound you.

"is the 80D advanced enough to warrant the extra cost?"

- mostly yes - IF you utilize ALL it's features and do not mind the weight and cost.

True the 80D is heavier, by about 8oz (half a pound), but when I consider it at system level with lenses, battery grips, and all of the other stuff I can't tell the difference. If weight is a consideration, then it may be time to downsize to Sony, Olympus, Fuji, and so on. However if you are going to stay with Canon DSLRs I don't think that you would notice much weight difference between the T7i and the 80D at a system level. Think of it as weight training and exercise! Stay strong!

I had my eye on the Mod 80 but after examining the T7i, I bought one and am very happy with it. It's NOT an entry level camera. I've been in photography almost all of my 78 yrs and am very critical of my work and will accept nothing but the best except for family outings (then I'll take whatever I can get) etc. I've owned many Minoltas, Canons, etc and associated glass and flash and other accessories as well as my own bw darkroom. I've shot vacations, prof weddings, prof sports such as track and field, rodeo, etc. I done just about everything except models and fashion. I've been in many photo clubs in the Dallas area. I've sold almost all of my camera, lenses, lights, and accessories and settled on one camera, the T7i. It's worth your consideration.

I have the Canon FF & crop bodies, (5D MK II & 7D MK II) and after reading many reviews on the 80D I had a GAS attack one evening and ordered one from B&H, and couldn't be more pleased with this little jewel and all the features it has. Now, after having the 80D for several months, I rarely us the others. My advice is go for the 80D. You won't be sorry IMO.
Best of luck in your quest.
Michael

Thanks to each of you for your replies and advice. I will most likely order the 80D.
