Germany at least 5 times, Austria, Belgium, France, Spain, Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland and then there is Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Bali, Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Mexico, and Canada. This year I will be adding Prague, Budapest, and the Netherlands to that list, not to mention my 4th trip to China later this year. Australia I have lost count, but more than 8 times. Vietnam twice, once was an all expense paid trip for one year. I carry I least on Nikon D750, not one encounter. I carry no weapons.

One more thing... If criminals are profiling victims, what does a guy with a nice camera, a purposeful walk, a mean expression and a metal club over his shoulder say to them? Attitude can change a profile!

In Berkeley.

As a matter of fact, don't get out of bed unless absolutely necessary (obvious). And, for Pete's sake, never open your door; don't even open a window. And don't watch TV; the game shows are depressing, the soaps and guest shows are so sad and the evening shows will scare you. Be careful that the water you drink is safe. Don't worry about food. If you never open a door or window, you'll run out of food in a short time and starve to death, thus terminating your miserable existence.

He needs to be compassionate...., at least give the pets away first!!!

I've been to Europe 8 times, England, Scotland, Ireland and Germany. Never felt threatened. I've carried my Nikon D810 openly in every country except Ireland. I took a camera I could pocket last time only because I got tired of lugging the beast around.

I would not put much credence in the US State Dept Advisory. For instance it has Chad listed with Somalia, Yeman, Syria, and North Korea on Trump's Travel Advisory list yet we have lived here in Chad for 6 years and feel safer than in many places in the US. In other parts of the world the US is listed as not very safe. When traveling ALWAYS keep your passport and money in an inner belt pocket under your clothes and yes don't travel alone. We have been in over 85 countries no real problems. One time by Victoria Falls a pickpocket took my date book out of my shirt pocket with a few dollars in it and ran but my South African friend with me saw it and yelled thief and caught the guy and got the date book back very rapidly. Lots of countries with Boko Haram and ISSA are not on the "list" If one carried a fire arm here in Chad and got caught he would be put in jail There is no permit for one. Whereever you go one should ALWAYS BE AWARE OF SURROUNDINGS or be sure your partner is also keeping a wary eye.

A friend of mine always carried a dummy wallet with a couple dollars and some other stuff to make it look convincing, and we both carried our money and passports in wallets that we wore around our necks under our clothes

My husband and I were walking around in Valparaiso, Chile. I was carrying a camera, very visible. We walked by another tourist also with a camera. Shortly after passing him we heard him scream, saw 2 guys wrestle him to the ground to grab his camera. Luckily someone was walking a dog and chased the men away, but the incident could have ended very badly. Wonder about precautions to take when using camera where tourists are often targeted for crime besides resorting to smartphone?

Yeah, that's always a concern when out with a camera. You can take precautions, but if two or more people want to get what you have, all the precautions in the world won't help. As for smartphones, they are also a target for thieves. Best to stay at home and see the world on TV or computer.

What would be a camouflage bag for a Canon 6d with a 70 to 300mm lens attached?

I have been to every country in Europe except Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, and Belerus. Have never felt threatened either. The European countries do a pretty good job of policing esp the tourist spots. Some of the cathedrals won't permit tripods. The weight of the camera helps decrease "camera shake".
