Great you have insurance for your gear. What about any injury you suffer?

I buy travelers insurance when on vacation that pays for transportation/ medical issues and hotel and meals if my travel is interrupted.

Taping over brand labels can reduce the attractiveness of your gear but I would believe that the pro thieves can tell an expensive SLR from a cheap one anyway. Non-cut straps help but if they want your gear they'll take it anyway. The best defense is to not go alone, nor flaunt your gear around. Low profile should be the theme. I have read of people using diaper bags for their gear. Doing that and only taking out the camera when you want to shoot will help reduce the risk. There is no universal solution except to stay home!

I just used black electrical tape to tape over branding on my cameras and lenses, even though I don’t own expensive FF cameras and gear. I am just trying to prove a point to myself that it isn’t about the camera gear so much as it is the skill of the photographer.

I suppose one could use a walking stick with a knob on one end and use it as club. Also never walk alone.

I carry a monopod with a removable knob on the end and so far I've been OK.

If we go to one place for a few days, leave your gear in the hotel safe until the last day. Meanwhile, plan all your shots.
But the best pictures I take are ones I hadn't expected.

I know. I would only follow that process in a place I deem unsafe.

Maybe a small camera vs. the super-pro looking 70-200 MM on a DSLR if you are really concerned...

I travel in many countries so I prefer the BlackRapid Sport Breathe camera strap. This is both a very secure and comfortable way to carry your camera,

Don't take anything with you. Be safe, be afraid, don't go outside your home.

As a matter of fact, don't get out of bed unless absolutely necessary (obvious). And, for Pete's sake, never open your door; don't even open a window. And don't watch TV; the game shows are depressing, the soaps and guest shows are so sad and the evening shows will scare you. Be careful that the water you drink is safe. Don't worry about food. If you never open a door or window, you'll run out of food in a short time and starve to death, thus terminating your miserable existence.

I've wondered if Canon L series lenses, being white, are stolen more often. Just did a search and at least one site lists the top 3 lenses stolen are all L series http://www.slrlounge.com/infographic-stolen-gear-likeliest-place-get-gear-stolen/ BUT I think only one of the three is white so there goes my theory :)

Like some others here I use an unmarked shoulder sling strap so the camera is somewhat hidden under my hand/arm at my side. I also have crappy looking beat up backpacks...

The most essential thing you can do, no matter where you are, is to be aware of your surroundings. Suspicious behavior is often easily detectable. No matter how you safe guard your valuables, if someone wants them, they will take them no matter the cost. Most important, never put up a fight for what you can replace.

My husband and I were walking around in Valparaiso, Chile. I was carrying a camera, very visible. We walked by another tourist also with a camera. Shortly after passing him we heard him scream, saw 2 guys wrestle him to the ground to grab his camera. Luckily someone was walking a dog and chased the men away, but the incident could have ended very badly. Wonder about precautions to take when using camera where tourists are often targeted for crime besides resorting to smartphone?

You need to hear stories from Tourists all over Europe, complaining about multiple crimes daily in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. In broad daylight at the Main Tourist Beaches. And, don't think America is exempt. There have been local TV Station Cameramen, that have been robbed at gunpoint, recording a story, stealing a TV video camera. Worth of that baby can be as much as $40,000. It has happened more than once in the USA. So, be cautious wherever you visit.

Stay Keep you gear away from the street side. And use a pistol. They always scour the streetside for people draping a camera. These are street thugs that Italian police ignore. Sorry to say be careful in all western Europe save Ireland. I know I have tangled with these creeps, don't do it. Be careful and mindful of small motorcyclist and moped drivers. Visit the US where ther is some order left. Don't think you can tangle with these thieves!

SS, when was the last time you saw a live tourist on the east side of the Bay Bridge?

One more thing... If criminals are profiling victims, what does a guy with a nice camera, a purposeful walk, a mean expression and a metal club over his shoulder say to them? Attitude can change a profile!

Attitude IS the profile. Purposeful walk chief among them, and situational awareness.
