Must do a lot of night photography.

No Dave, I listen to good music at night. Almost anything from 1960 through 1985 is better then anything that has come after, just my thoughts! I'm a "Day Tripper" or is that a Day Shooter, what ever!!

I'm talking about the person shooting landscape with 1000 ISO...that must be night work.

I got my first radio in 1961...a two transistor! Gee, we didn't refer to any of our music as "oldies."

Got my first transistor radio in 1957. It was a one transistor radio and I had to build it. The music that our folks listened to may have been "oldies" to us but we knew better then to actually say that.

Funny but the gentleman never came back to my question but that's nothing new here.

DxOMark data shows the D850 to be one of the best for shooting in the low light in a gymnasium.

You are mistaking "scoring" with the testing.

Once again here is the data from Bill Claff and from DxOMark showing exactly the same results. The D850 is better than the D750 or the D810. This time I have included D500, D5, and D4s data too. This list is from best to worst and the values are ISO for a useful dynamic range of 6.5 fstops.

Camera ... Claff .... DxO
D5 ............ 7178 ... 6556
D4s .......... 4956 ... 4546
D850 ........ 4115 ... 4396
D750 ........ 4075 ... 4081
D810 ........ 3439 ... 3565
D500 ........ 2557 ... 2600

The significant point is that both sets of data agree on the order even though there is variation in exact measurements. Keep in mind that, over that range of ISO values, a change of 500 to 600 is about 1/3rd of an fstop, hence all of cthe high end models are close, all of the mid-level bodies are close, and only the D500 (as will every APS-C sensor) is dramatically low.

Note that while this discussion has been about Nikon cameras the same range is available with Canon models too.

The fact is that the DxOMark "sports" rating does not suggest what you expect it to. The D850 is nearly as good as the D4s!
DxOMark b data /b shows the D850 to be one of th... (show quote)

Then why are the "sports" rankings

D5 ......... 29th
D4s ....... 12th
D850 ..... 25th
D750 ..... 18th
D810 ..... 22nd
D500 ..... 62nd

Do you actually think the D810, the D750, and the D4s are all better for low light high ISO work than the D5?

Has it occured to you that the DxO "score" shows something other than low light capability?

Think, logically, in a "reality check" mode, before trotting out a "sports score" as something it is not.

Very observant of you to bring that up. I thought the same. I'm outta this thread. It's run it's course.

A good point. Perhaps the term should be "a preponderance of what others say", which you certainly have here.

I don't want the D850 any more because I've read that there is too much noise. Maybe the pixels are just too many, or too small so that the limit of the technology is reached in this design. Plus, the camera has to be even more sensitive to vibration/shake/etc... due to the smaller pixels, which is required if the sensor is the same size as other dslrs, which is the 35mm size.

Comments?

Can I have it :).... but seriously. Many years ago in a far off galaxy I wrecked my Minolta SRT 101 (an SLR) my first. Anyways, I went on a search for a more better camera. I went with the Olympus OM1 (still SLR) The pictures and I took were stunning. Everything about that camera seemed right. The view finder was big and bright. The feel of the camera was perfect. I was shooting a lot of formula one cars and going to grand prix event and winning prizes for the shots. Enter some sad information about the camera.... a sad and dramatic time in the galaxy. The mirror was reported as very noisy and everyplace I read how it would ruin my pictures and cause shake rattle and roll to all my photography. I said to myself how can this be happening to me. I been a good boy. I did not deserve such treatment. I have to get rid of this inferior camera which would surely destroy any chance I had of being the galaxy's greatest photographer. I wondered the galaxy aimlessly to find the perfect replacement for this inferior machine. I found it. I made my new choice. It was what everyone said was the state of the art bestest ever perfect camera. I began taking pictures with it they were just as good as what I was shooting before maybe some not so good as..... but I was rid of that horrible feeling that the mirror would slam and ruin my life..... and also at great loss those beautiful lenses that I just couldn't make fit on my new wonderful galaxy approved camera. BUT I BIT THE BULLET AND DID IT. Years later I wandered through the time space continuum. I realized how wonderful my life and photography was with that noisy blaming mirror deficient camera. lets see a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.... If what you have is right for you that's all that should matter, If it ain't broke don't fix it. OK back to the beginning CAN I HAVE IT :)

Heh, you see, I thought we would have a nice discussion, then people insulted me and called me a troll. Someday my musical about Quilting will be a smash hit, either on the stage or a movie, and you can read the screenplay on an Amazon Kindle, if you want to, and see the great songs I wrote with my partner, Diana Fischer. I wrote most of the lyrics, and she and I wrote every single note. I had the tune in my head as I wrote the lyrics, so it was excellent. So you can insult me all you want, I will be a success. I want to buy a penthouse in NYC over-looking Central Park. Then, my oil paintings and watercolors (and photos?) will sell for thousands of dollars, and I have almost 100 of them all ready for that day. I have many, many more oil paintings and watercolors that are not on my website yet.

My father said the same thing except for the years, 1930 through 1950.

I did not read every response. Did not really see any name calling but knowing UHH some do get a bit nasty. I think most of us really were concerned about your reasons for getting rid of the D850. Not that you should not, there are reasons for switching systems personal and professional choices and you have a right to yours. I know I was one who did it and away from my Nikons (but not because they weren't really great cameras). Anyways, sorry if you were offended in anyway. I just came from your web sight. awesome work. I love your water colors and your photography is excellent. My response...hmm was just having some fun recalling myself in a similar dilemma. Looks like your goals are all within your reach. I wish you the mostist in you success. don't worry be happy :)
