I do have the knowledge and experience to shoot (large format) film. I like the physics and geometry involved. For me, film is more challenging and therefore more inspiring - and there is something about having produced a physical artifact that you can hold in your hand ! My resolution is to shoot more film !
I just completed putting together a 4X5 field system to shoot mostly B&W. I have 6X9 medium format to shoot mostly color transparencies. - and, this was all cheaper than a premier full frame digital system.

When one looks at the expense of film+developer and compares that to the price of just the body of a D850, one can shoot close to 30,000 developed 35mm exposures for the same amount of money. If one shoots 4x5 that equates to 2,168 developed exposures. Who says shooting film is expensive? This is based on processing the film in one's own darkroom. There is a small amount that one will pay for water usage. Still, that's a lot of exposures.

Better is subjective. Film has a place and I personally think it inspires better creativity. I compose better notes and letters when I use a fountain pen vs taping a computer keyboard. Preferences are personal.

As for the “time” to shoot film vs digital, if your watch has hands and no battery then it’s time to shoot film.

I agree completely. There is a time for both film and digital. I still shoot both. Besides, it's nice to see someone else still uses fountain pens besides me.

I completely understand why someone might choose one method or the other for reasons that are totally personal preference. For example I do not own a smartphone and never will. That is my personal preference. My question is more about any reason, beyond any personal preferences one way or the other, to choose one over the other. Is there anything whatsoever that an image shot on film can produce, any look for example, that cannot be reproduced exactly in digital, by someone with a "PhD" in post processing ???

To answer your question, yes.

Well before last weekend I use film because that was the only way. Since I didn't have the darkroom any more I switched to slide film and now I think I would use slide film when I want SOOC.
I would use my Df in low light as I found it works much better than my film camera in low light. Even with flash I can crank the ISO up to 800 or 1600 and have the flash cycles very fast even when bouncing.

Yes, both reasons are correct. People who love cameras enjoy shooting both mediums, film is still the original raw file.

I have a great idea, Nick ... let's start a petition ... and when we have a 1000 names, we'll send it to Rochester, asking Kodak to reinstate Kodachrome!!!!

Eastman Kodak Co., which once had 60,000 employees in the Rochester, NY area, now has fewer than 2,500 AS OF 2014 .

Ten years ago I stooped using film. I find it works better for me to print my own work with digital capture.

I would vote for 30 seconds previous to the time it was posted.

I still shoot film and this year's resolution is to shoot more. It's been pretty evenly split between digital and film. Each has its strong points and each its weaknesses when compared. So, the approach is, even though a wood screw can be pounded into a board with a hammer, it works better if done with a screwdriver. Likewise, I'll use the appropriate tool when photographing.

Bob ... I didn't know you could take pictures with a screwdriver! .... When did you discover that?

Must've been very heavy film.
