Is anyone familiar with this model the Canon G-9. I am thinking of buying one off Craigs list, to use a pocket camera, could any on who has it or had it tell me if it would be worth my while to have to use as a pocket camera. Thanks in advance...............Mike

I bought my daughter a G9 but it was the MII. She absolutely loves it. I've seen her pictures and they are really nice. Very nice carry around. BTW I have a G7X MII to supplement my DSLR and I am using it more and more all the time.

I have the G9 Mark II and like it a lot. I wanted a camera that was light and small, rather than always carrying the heavier SLR with me. I use the G9 more than my 6D now, so I’m able to enjoy walking around more without having the neck strain. The camera takes very good pictures and the colors are accurate. The only thing I would like to have different is a longer zoom range, but that’s the only drawback I can think of.

Just asking, but have you considered your cell phone camera for a walking around camera?

Isn't the G9 a fairly older model? I've had a G10 for several years now and still use it occasionally. I have no complaints about my G10, nice little camera. I've read the G9 II is a nice camera. If the G9 is anything like the G10, I'm sure it is capable of decent photos. As for pocket cameras, my current one that I carry all the time is the G1X III. It's like having a pocket sized DSLR without the size or weight.

I have owned the original G1, the G9, and currently have a G15. My G9 worked great for a number of years but experienced a problem where the lens would not extend and I had to get it fixed. Although it now worked I decided to get a G15 as I did not want to rely on a camera that might fail again. Several folks have mentioned a G9 Mark II which I am not familiar with. Perhaps they are thinking of a G1X instead. In any case, the G series are great cameras and I have taken many quality shots with them over the years. Unless you are getting the G9 for a steal I would recommend a newer model as they are not that expensive.

I have a g10.
it has a large sensor and takes great pictures.
still use it quite a bit when i don't want to lug something larger around.
would be perfect for this and shouldnt cost very much.

Great little cameras. My first G was the 9. Needed a camera I could get out of the tank bag of my bike, turn it on, take a few quick shots, get it back in the tank bag with just the left hand. Between it and my two other G camera ( now have a G16 ) I've taken thousands of pictures and out of 5 cameras I have, it's still my most used.

I was a G9 user for many years. It performed quite well, but she k out the G12. The price is about the same with a sharper lens.

I had a G9 for years - and I loved it except it was a little slow for low light/evening photos. It developed an issue where it would not power up. I googled "canon g9 will not power up" and it appears to be a common issue with the G9's where a tiny screw comes loose and shorts out the power module. Canon won't touch it and I didn't want to attempt to fix it myself (there are videos on line showing how to change power module). So it now sits on my shelf.

I had mine repaired by a Florida repair center for a similar issue. I ended up with a G15 as I never felt confident it would not fail again.

I had a G7 and have and use a G15 now, exactly as you describe, a pocket camera, works out very well, whenever I don't want to carry the T4i it's my go to

I guess it depends how large your pockets are. Probably will not fit a pants pocket, but maybe a coat. I still own mine and it takes great photos. Larger sensor and 12.1 mega pixels if I recall correctly. Nice features but introduced in September, 2007, so if latest technology is not important, go for it. They have been selling on eBay for anywhere between $50 and $100, depending on condition and what is included. Make sure your deal includes a charger and battery, as I noted some sales do not.

I wouldn’t give this a lot of thought. Canon G9 batteries and chargers are easy to find/readily available.
