Hi Everyone,

My husband gave me a Sony Alpha 35 DSLR camera recently with the basic 18-55 lens and an extra 55-200 lens. I love trying to photograph flora, wildlife (large and small), candid shots of people and sunsets (I'm not up early enough for sunrises!). I'm looking at extending my lens collection but the Sony lenses (macro and bigger zooms) are pretty expensive. Does anyone have any advice on cheaper brands that are compatable with my camera (and hopefully with the autofocus electronics too etc) without loosing too much picture quality?
Your advice would be greatfully appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

In general, with lenses, you get what you pay for. If you want it to play nice with your camera body, you're probably gonna have to pay the price.

Remember, everything you see in the photograph has to go through the lens. It's not a good place to cut corners.

In general....... Your experience may vary....... Taxes and gratuities not included.......

P.S. Nice shot !

look at used lenses from Keh.com priced better than ebay, have a free 6 monthy warranty, excellant reputation to deal with. they do their own repairs on site, every lens i bought including those rated bgn or ug came to me cleaned and inspected and working like a charm. Highly recomend them for used manufacturerr battieries, flash guns, film bodies etc.

Interesting website sinatraman - thanks for the tip. Do you know if they will send to Australia and still honour the warrantee? What do you mean by rated bgn or ug? (I did say I was new to this field so sorry if my questions seem basic.) Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Kimbee. None of the photo's were photoshopped either - in fact, I'm still making up my mind which one to get. I've tried a couple of free photo editing programs - any suggestions?

PAG:
Your Alpha 35 mates up nicely with Minolta AF lenses. They are readily available on EBay. They are all used, so prices can be reasonable.

Thanks Charlie. Is it wise to buy second hand photopgraphy gear on ebay? I get a lot of new stuff that way but never feel confident to buy second hand. Your thought are appreciated.

PAG: I have had good experences buying from Ebay. The sellers have ratings. I can only speak for myself, but again my experience with Ebay has been positive. As for buying used Minolta AF lenses , it is a great option. (Sony bought Minolta and kept the new Sony Alpha line of cameras compatible, to include AF. As Sony IS is in the camera body all Minolta (Maxxum, Dynamax) lenses are IS capable.
Hope this makes sense. ( If you pay my airfare, I'll bring a handful of Minolta lenses for you to try out !!!) :D

Hi PAG. Welcome to the hog. your shots are very nice. As far as lenses go, don't be in a hurry to buy more. When i was teaching photography to adults, i told them, use the lens with the camera first for at least 6 months. Once you have exhausted all you can do with that lens, then you will have a better understanding of which new lens you would want. Oh, save your money, buy a GOOD lens it will last you a lifetime.

Thanks in advance.
