The primary issue with most point & shoot cameras is the small sensor size. I would consider something like the Fuji X-A3 with an APSC size sensor. It's small and the kit lens gives about a 24-70 equivalent viewpoint. It's about $599.

Lens on the fz1000 goes from 2.8 to 4. Fz 300 is 2.8 throughout its length

OK, looks like I will have to call Best Buy and see which of the suggested cameras they have on hand for me to test out. My primary concern is clear photos from a distance, so zoom is a priority.

Thanks everyone!

Africa! I am not sure I would want a 24-70 in Africa.

True, but the FZ1000 has a larger sensor. I have the FZ1000 and the ZS50, a very good 1/2" sensor for walkabout, and probably comparable to the FZ300. With good light JPEG images from the FZ1000 and FZ300 may be similar, but with less than good light, the FZ1000 is far better. Still, the weather sealing in the FZ300 is an advantage, and it is $200 cheaper.

I purchased a Fujifilm Finepix S1 three years ago for a trip to Alaska. I wanted a zoom that would capture the wildlife. I was originally looking at Canon, Nikon and Sony. The feature that sold me was the weather resistance of the Fujifilm. I haven't been sorry. The panorama feature works well, but it is shot in movie mode and so does not have the quality of shooting several shots and stitching them. It also will not shoot a time exposure longer than 30 seconds. If you want star trails they are out of the question. I have taken some nice night shots, just no star trails. I would love to have a higher quality SLR, but the convenience of not having to carry multiple lenses as well as the expense of purchasing lenses that cost more than the body have made this a quality purchase for my limited budget.

That's another one I'm looking at - impressive!

Panasonic fz300 would be my choice and it is weather resistant. It also beats the nikon b700 at Camera Decision in comparison testing. Fz 1000 would be my second choice because it had a larger sensor.

If you have a Costco near-by they have a Canon bridge camera on sale along with the Panasonic.
Prices start at $359.00. Both great cameras.

I have a Canon Powershot SX610 HS that I purchased from Amazon for about $270. It has a 20 Megapixel sensor and 18X zoom (focal length 25-450mm). It is 4.14 x 2.4 z 1.06 inches. It takes fantastic pictures. It will fit in my shirt pocket and is that camera that I "keep in my car" so that wherever I go, I can capture a shot. I took a hand held picture of the Super Moon (leaning against my truck) on December 4th and posted it on this forum on January 24. The resolution is great. Here is a copy of that photo. I highly recommend that camera for quality, portability and price.

Hello photographer friends! I am purchasing a new camera to take on my trip to Africa in a couple of months.

I am looking for a point and shoot bridge camera. I don't want to have to deal with trying to change lenses and keeping sensors clean while riding in dusty conditions. Bringing 2 camera bodies (one with short lens the other with long) is out of the question.

I have a top dollar range of around $750. So far, the Nikon Coolpix B700 to be in the lead of cameras I've looked at. My husband has one and likes it. He is not as heavily into photography as I am, and I was wondering if someone might suggest a better choice for me.

Here is the link for the B700, if any of you care to take a look:

Thanks for any words of wisdom you hay have to offer!

I know it's a bit more than twice your budget, but a trip to Africa sounds like a once in a lifetime photo op. You should get the best bridge camera for that, which is the Sony RX10 IV. You could always sell it at a small loss when you get back if you want, but I bet you'd keep it. With the 24-600mm zoom, super fast focus (that stays focused even on moving subjects), and fast burst rate, it is perfect for both wildlife and landscapes.

I would certainly try the Panasonic Lumix 1000. It will certainly match if not surpass any Nikon or Canon Bridge camera You can even take stills from the 4K video if you wish

I currently have the Kodak Pixpro AZ652 (I emphasize the '2'. The AZ651 had issues.). It has a 65X zoom from 24mm to 1560mm and is clear at the upper end unlike the Nikon which boasts 83X and is said to be "soft" at the upper end. The manual of the AZ652 can be found on line and it includes specifications. It sells for $380 at https://store.mypixpro.com/astro-zoom/ (No, I don't get a commission.)

I have the Panasonic FZ300 and used the FZ200 for years. The only drawback is the smaller sensor. Zooms out to the equivalent 0f 600mm with a constant aperture of 2.8. Some of the cameras that zoom out further lose sharpness as you zoom out. Shoots 4K video, shoots raw, has a Leica lens, decent in lower light, the FZ300 is weather proofed against dust and moisture. If you buy from B & H Photo, no tax if you live outside of NY and NJ. On sale now for about $500.
