Hi! I know that there are quite a few posts about clouds. I took these 3 pix in Alaska this Summer. It was very overcast and I was using my camera dujour, a Canon SD 1400 IS. I discovered that this camera was extremely limited when there wasn't enough available light, and so, some of my whale-watching pictures didn't come out the way I would have liked. I have since bought a Nikon 5100, but I don't think I'm going back to AK for a long while.
Here's the deal. You play with these 3 pictures and see what you can get out of them. I KNOW there's some drama in them...I can feel it, but I'd like to see what you guys can do to them to fix them up.
Just let me (and anybody else who's interested,) know what you did to them.
Thanks
Indi

Hi Indy..

Alaska is a tough place to shoot because of the expanse of the area, and when the weather moves in there just isn't any color or contrast to work with..

I've looked at your photos and there just isn't a good bit of initial capture data to work with..

I would suggest that you use a good editor, such as photoshop, and lighten the shado, darken the highlight, saturate the colors a bit, then resharpen (and straighten those horizons)... You should then have some nice snapshots of your visit..

I'd be lying if I said I didn't already work on these pictures. (see reworked picture) I did pretty much what you suggested except I did (as I usually do) DARKEN the shadows...interesting. I'm going to try that & see what comes of it.
I just bought an adjustable ND filter for my new camera which I think will help with the clouds when I need it.
I was so excited to capture any whale flukes, and this one against the mountainous backdrop was one of my best.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Indi

Whoa! I like what you did, especially to the second one with the whale fluke. So, what did you do?
Indi :)

ran 'em both through ReDynaMix. in the second one, i also added some selective curves to bring up the green in the headland, brightened and sharpened a bit.

Wow! That reDynamix is something else. I just ran #2 through it and I'm really happy. I could play with this all day. Better get out of the house. :D
Thanks.
I haven't looked at Topaz yet.

It was in Juneau, on a whale watch, this past July. We were EXTREMELY LUCKY. We saw about 21 whales (somebody counted) and were lucky enough to see several sequences of bubble-netting, which that picture is part of. Apparently, whales do not like the sun, so we were lucky it was overcast.

Wish I had my new camera then. I have 55-300 mm tele. That whale fluke would have been right in front of me.

Kind of like the original but more defined. A cross between yours and the one I did above your post. The one above yours I used the ReDynamix plug in for PS 7. Someone suggested it and boy am I happy with that.
What software do you use?

I used "Microsoft Picture-it" on it and just clicked the "process" tab. I thought it was interesting the colors it pulled out. It is an old program but it works on Windows 7.

That's funny. I use Digital Image Pro, a paid grandchild of Picture It! neither one of which Microsoft supports anymore.
for Automatic changes to the image, I click on "Levels Auto Fix." Most of the time it really does the job or is, at least, a good starting point.
Many people in this forum use all sorts of programs including Adobe stuff. I have PS 7 and now I use it only to get to the ReDyanimix filter.
No one else has admitted to using a Microsoft product.

quote=Dria I used "Microsoft Picture-it"... (show quote)

I know - I haven't heard anyone mention MS at all ! I learned "MS Picture-it" it is older than the "Digital Image Pro" I bought "Dig Pro" in 2003 and was aggravated because they had taken out some of the easy fixes that were in the original -- it seems to me that the makes of Image software thing if they make it more complicated people will think it is better.
I have PS7 and now 10 is out.. I can get CS5 at student price (daughter in college) but it has a learning curve- Maybe this winter when I will be trapped inside by snow.

BYW- I would love to see more of your Alaska photos.
