I guess the point that I and others are really making is don't spend money on a replacement 18-55mm lens. Get a better lens! You can find used or refurbished vr lens that would be a much better choice. Just one example is here: https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/refurbished-camera-lenses/af-s-dx-nikkor-18-200mm-f%252f3.5-5.6g-ed-vr-ii-refurbished.html. You might be able to find the same lens on eBay as well (but be wary of grey market lenses as NikonUSA will not repair them). I've used the 18-200mm for 3+ years now and that's the only lens I use on my DX body.

Af-p lenses will not work on a D5100. See the link: https://nikonrumors.com/2016/04/04/the-new-af-p-nikkor-18-55mm-f3-5-5-6g-dx-lenses-works-only-with-three-nikon-dslr-cameras.aspx/

Are you looking to replace a broken or failed lens with another one like it? Or, are you wanting to upgrade to something better than the basic "kit" lens?

Did you inherit this camera? Are you new to digital single lens reflex photography? What are your budget constraints? Do you plan to upgrade anytime in the future? Most photographers would want to replace the original "kit" lens that came with the camera with something more flexible/useful. I have a d5100 and almost never use my 18-55 mm lens anymore. The answers to the above questions would help frame advice.

Good way to get rid of a little used lens ... send it to the person who needs it.

Check Cameta Camera for their refurbished stock. You will save $ and get a year warranty on USA warranted lenses.

You can get a used one on ebay from a top rated seller for $80 to $100. I buy all my cameras and lenses used on ebay. If it is said to be in excellent condition and it is not, Paypal will refund your money including postage.

Giving him your unused lens is a great thing-thank you for that, re-inforces feelings that America still has good people.

Try MPB for used lens. I have had very good service from them. My d5100 came with a 18-105 f /3.5g and it is still one of my favorite lines

There are a few articles out there where pros have used kit lenses on published shots......I am learning....but I am getting the feeling that equipment can help...but the human element makes the difference. I have done a lot of things.....flying aircraft to Taxidermy.....this is by far the most challenging and rewarding.... gear helps...but the best can from cheap gear and a good photographer....just an opinion....again...I am not close to a pro.....but someday I hope to be....get what you can afford and do the best you can with that...mine...which you are welcome to....served me well...I just have overlappers so to speak......it is yours if you want it

I do not believe the AF-P lenses work on a D5100. You need an AF-S.

I believe you need at least a D5300 for the AF-P lenses.

Check that it is AF-S...not AF-P.
