You need a set of filter wrenches. They are cheap.

Above is one but you need sized for your lens.

Hi i have used a hose clamp it fits around the filter and can be clamped down tight enough to not slip then if I can't turn it by hand I take a small hammer and give it a light tap to the direction it needs to go to loosen up this works and doen't damage anything and the filter can be used again I have used this on other thing that can't be damaged .Howie1a

I have a cpl filter stuck to a step up ring. tried the filter wrenches and everything else I can think of. I should have bought the brass step up ring. serves me right for attaching a cheap step up ring to an expensive cpl. lesson learned.

Please do not laugh at this method. I have used it many times in my 20 years of shooting and also shared it with friends who think it is a great solution when you are out and about.

You need a shoe or boot with a rubber sole or heel. Take off the shoe. Take off the lens from the camera. Put the offensive filter flat, flush on the rubber part of the shoe, press firmly, and turn.

Oh, make sure the bottom of your shoe is clean if you have been out hiking or you will have one heck of a mess. :-))

Seriously, give it a try on a NOT jammed filter to test out my method.

Same concept but a computer mouse pad is easier.

Brent, my wife pick this up at Bed, Bath & Beyond. It works great on jars and has 8 sizes (the inner and outer rings vary in size). All-in-all a very handy tool.

Thanks Photog8.......my filter is 95mm and the jar opener that we have is to small. Darn! Thanks for the idea though.

My filter is 95mm and is larger than the typical jar opener. Darn!

Thanks Howie1a for the suggestion, but the mere thought of using a small hammer on my lens gives me the willies!

LoneRangeFinder, this seems like the best solution to the problem. I checked out your link and the filter wrench only goes to 77mm and my filter that is stuck is a 95mm. I'm sure they have larger filter wrenches, right? I will research it out.

DON"T USE WD40, its a mess to clean off the lens and it probably won't help. Others have made good suggestions.

Thank you Manglesphoto for your advice. I will not use WD40 or any other lubricants.

One thing that can work is to screw a filter into the filter it helps keep the filter round (typically you end up squeezing two sides even if you try to hold loosely and why a filter wrench works so well) the other thing it does is give more to grip on to.

you might end up with two filters stuck together but they probably will separate easier than on the lens.
