1936 Johnstown Flood

In my library of photos I have some B&W's of the 1936 Johnstown Flood and how the Susquehanna River overflowed my hometown and the surrounding area. The individual shots were taken by one of my relatives in 1936. I have no idea which relative took them, but my mom and dad were there at the time and had the original developed pictures in their collection. Additionally, they had a magazine that recounted the flood as it affected Williamsport, Pennsylvania (and local towns), where they were from and where I was born. I scanned the pictures from this magazine, as well, because of the significance to my family, some of whom still live there.

While I did not take these pictures, I wanted to make them available for others to see. So I put them on Shutter Fly as a public album.

The historical significance of many of these photos, taken by some member of my family, is very important to me. I hope you enjoy seeing images of this event.

Here is the Shutter Fly link, and here are several of those shots that might interest you.

Johnstown has a flood museum, they may be interested in them.

Wow that got me thinking. I'm a fan of Johnny Cash. He sings a song, Highway Patrol Man. Actually it's written and performed by Springsteen but better performed by Cash. There's a line in the lyrics, "The band played the night of the Johnstown flood" However, It is thought the song refers to May 21, 1889, Johnstown Pensylvania, 2000 lives lost. Recommend you listen to the song. Best wishes, Andrew.

Interesting. I saw a TV documentary on that flood. It made life miserable for those affected by it. Sadly to say, it happened again, 41 years later in 1977.
