Apple Photos crashes

Ever since upgrading my iMac's operating system to High Sierra I have not been able to use its organizing and editing program, Photos. I can launch it, but it quits about ten seconds later. I've had extensive tech support phone sessions with the Photos specialists, but they have not able to fix the problem. They say they have determined (by having me perform quite a number of tests) that the app itself is not corrupted, which is likely to mean that at least one of the photo files is causing the problem. They had me send the results of some of my diagnostic tests to Apple's engineers for evaluation. That was a week ago and they still haven't gotten back to me. Very frustrating.

I have Photoshop Elements 12, which I only use for occasional edits that go beyond the capabilities of Photos. However, I don't want to start the long complicated process of converting from Photos to PE, especially because I would loose the comprehensive integration with Apple's operating system and the ability to seamlessly share photos.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Has it been solved? How? Help!

I'd visit an Apple store and get help direct. I have had experience with a messed up photo causing program problems.

If you are using Sony cameras, Capture One is an excellent low cost alternative!

Seems to me that backing up photos library, then deleting them from you iMac then relaunching the app would prove to you and Apple engineers how valid the "corrupt photo file" theory is.
Also, you could load the last number of photos you have added since upgrading, in PSE 12 to see if they all behave properly. If not delete the bad one(s) and try using Photos again.
Nothing too easy for sure when dealing with mysteries of the computer world.
Good luck in resolving the issue.

I cannot certify this download, but the ad reads well. I'm also aware of malware associated with some free downloads.
Just thought I'd send you the link. http://www.jpegrecovery.org/about-us.php For Mac & Windows
Good luck with your issue. I'm sure it is very frustrating.

Sorry to hear you are having that problem. I updated my 2015 21" iMac to High Sierra about a week ago, but have had no issues with Photos or any other applications. I'm pretty sure Apple had you run Disk Utility, but it not, give that a try. Good luck.

If you go looking for a new editing program - have a look at Affinity It was originally written for Mac - proved so good that it was then written for Windows - and is giving PS a run for it's money. It is not that expensive.

I also have had no Photos problems after upgrading to and even subsequently updating High Sierra. PE is an excellent app, tho v12 is not the most current. I believe PE 2018 is several versions more recent. The suggestion of visiting an Apple store in person may be a way of speeding up the process provided one exists in your area. Otherwise, wait for help and stay in contact with Apple.

Thanks much for all the help. Since my original post I have gathered more info. I switched User to a test account and found Photos to be functioning perfectly. So, that lends further credence to Apple's contention that the problem is with a particular photo file or files. I'm waiting to hear if Apple wants me to send them my entire Photos library for evaluation. I hope that happens soon, because a week from today I'm leaving on a trip where I'll be taken lots of photos and ........

I have been on with Apple several times too. I lost the touchpad and the mouse connection a lot not times Im now have both and when ons stops I find I can goto the other for one movement and then they both work again. Apple has not fixed it. I also lose software programs (Aperture and others) at times as I am working with them. Not sure of Apple any more. I think they bare not interested in the computers any more and are making too much money ant the rest of the product line.

Start a new Photos Library so you are at least good to go for your trip. (Search help or Google for instructions.) then, for your old one, do you have your pictures backed up, maybe as jpegs? Or the Photos Library? If the latter, see if that works without crashing. If the former, import your pictures in small batches until you can identify the corrupt file.

Same here, go online and set up an appointment with an Apple Store in one of their "Projects" classes (Obviously it will not work if you don"t have access to an Apple store). Project Classes tackle all types of problems including Photo issues. I found no more than four people in a class which means you will get some individual time with an "Apple Expert". They helped me more than once when I switched to Apple.

Based on your recommendation I created a new library. As you said, I will now be able to use that for the photos from my trip. Thanks.

I would also like to use your suggestion for importing small batches from my main library to locate the bad ones. Do you know how to do that since I can't get to them from within Photos without it quitting?

first photo.library is actually a folder with your photos in you can right click to see the contents.

First thing i would try is to move this folder somewhere.
when photos starts up it should ask to create a new photo library
maybe it will not crash with this new one.

since i see you have a new library you can look inside the old library i think the originals are in a folder called originals you will figure it out.

I was using an old version of Luminar with High Sierra. It even crashed my boot camp PC Windows 10!!!
Downloaded the new version, all problems solved.
Versioning May be the culprit
