Going on a tour to Costa Rica. Bring my Fuji X-Pro2 with 18-135 lens with close up filter and my Olympus EM-5 with 75-300 lens. Of course i’ll bring cleaning supplies and rain covers for the camera.
Any other suggestions? I may also bring my infrared camera.

It looks like that would be fine for me. I wouldn't want to lug around to much...it gets heavy after awhile .

Have a great trip.

Just returned from great family trip to Costa Rica! Hermosa Beach, south of Jaco, and La Fortuna near Arenal volcano. Perfect beach weather but Arenal was wet and chilly. Challenging driving—-poor signage. Avoid night driving if possible. Private message me if you want more details about our trip.

Lucky you! The Ticos (Costa Ricans) are always polite, friendly and helpful. My last visit to Costa Rica was more than 60 years ago, but I think the following might still apply.

San Jose is the capitol city. You might also want to visit Cartago(sp), in the central part of the country and a former capitol; Limon, the major city on the East coast; or perhaps Punta Arenas, on the west coast.

Cartago has a lot of history and a beautiful cathedral, and is near some of the Volcano country. Limon has beautiful water, and is just South of the Rio Blanco, which winds through dense forests where you will see monkeys, sloths, quetzal birds, Parrots and McCaws, and a host of other fauna, large and small. Creeks connecting to Rio Blanco feature giant Iguanas, some exceeding six feet in length, but harmless if left alone. Punta Arenas is near what has become a favorite region for surfers. In the central area, I hope the virgin rainforests are still there, beautiful, untouched and rife with Flora and Fauna. Nearby, I think to the North, is the Sierra Del Muerto, a beautiful mountain range, also untouched, I hope.

San Jose is located about midway between Limon and Punta Arenas, and is home base for the nation's two railroads, one running from San Jose to Limon (The Northern Railroad, or Ferrocarryil de Norteamericana; which is narrow gauge and travels through some of the roughest (and most beautiful) scenery I have ever witnessed. The other line runs West from San Jose to Punta Arenas, and is standard gauge.

Costa Rica has three active major volcanos I recall: Poaz, Turrialba, and Irazu. Poaz was the least active and located in an area of Coffee Finkas and sugar cane plantations; both really worth seeing. The other two are located fairly near to each other, in the central mountain area. Another volcano has appeared in Coast Rica, during the last ten years or so; photos I have seen of it are extremely impressive.

Everywhere you go in Costa Rica is beautiful. Being close to the Equator, year-round temps are 70's daytime and 60's at night. The is very stable. Immigration is relatively easy and cost of living is very favorable, I understand.

Have a great trip, and watch out for the Guaro (a very strong, surprising, formidible liquor distilled from Plantanoes, a sort of bananas........... Mercer

If you are interested in hiring a guide in the Manuel Antonio area, please let me recommend Andres Martin Chavez Rojas. He is one of the leading ornithologists in Costa Rica (particularly about bird songs and calls) and a great guide. I spent the day with him and saw more birds than I ever expected. And he was a big help taking pictures. He was especially helpful in making sure that I had really seen the particular markings that identified each bird in his scope. This link is a good write-up by another traveler who used Andres as a guide in the national park. My day with him was spent outside the park. http://livetravelplay.marionette.ca/2015/09/23/lessons-from-a-costa-rican-wildlife-guide/

I live in Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste. I use an XT1/XE2 with the 18-135mm and 16-50mm and lots of vintage manual focus lenses. I also have D300 and D7K Nikons. Your equipment sounds fine to me. Guanacaste, where I live, is the most hot and dry region of CR. Inland in the mountains it's much sooler and often much wetter. Here it's about 87/90F daytime 75/80F at night.

Bring "off" bug spray. Essential.

Costa Rica is not inexpensive. It's on a par with many European countries.

The people are great. However you need to take the usual precautions with your gear. The roads are OK, once off the "highway" you have dirt roads. A 4x4 is a good idea. Get the Waze app it's pretty good now and will generally take you where you want to go.

The light here is fantastic. The animal/bird/insect life is amazing. I love living here.

If you would like more info please feel free to private message me I'll be delighted to share more info with you. Check out our facebook page - it's mainly photos - hopefully you'll see what I mean about the light. https://www.facebook.com/smilindog/

Pura Vida from Costa Rica. Andy
