I was there, shot the upper canyon without a tripod, and got great photos. I have no regrets about not taking the photo tour and having to lug a tripod around. I focused on the wonders of the canyon formations, not on my camera settings. Don’t let your camera gear get in the way of the experience.

Don't waste time with a tour company...they just charge you more. Drive directly to the sight whereby the family will sign you up and provide guides. Arrive 2 hours early, 11:30 to 12:30 is the best time slot when the sun is high, and the light rays coming through the canyon are best. The guide will give you the settings but learn how to bracket your shots in the dark. One tip a local gave me was to set my tripod up to shoot on my knees. That way I was the first to set up on the sand while others fumbled around to get behind me and adjust their cameras. You probably have only 2-3 minutes to get your shot per location, before other tours start screaming for you to move.

It is very crowded and stressful in there. If you really want to get good photos, don't take the cattle tour. Spend the extra money for the pro tour.

Another tip for capturing the rays of light. Be patient. When your guide throws sand up into the light, wait about 10 seconds or so to begin taking your brackets. Otherwise the rays will look too white and fake. Wait until the sand dissipates so that the ray is translucent. The shot I got was better than the one the pros took for the brochure. This is about the exact same location as the previous post...they missed the rays of light. This is why you want a guide to position you at the exact time of light. You are traveling a long way...do it right...get your shots.

This May I will be shooting both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons and X Canyon. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what type of lenses to use, best time of day, ISO, Aperture, and Speed?? Thanks so much. Zoso

I was there a few years back and I believe it's the North Canyon the canyon with the narrow top entrance should be shot in the morning or late afternoon. And The other canyon the one with the wider opening at the top, that was best shot mid day according to the tour guides.

when we were there we also took a boat ride on Lake Powell that went around Antelope Island. The boat cruises right up the beginning of the canyon...
if i remember the water in 400' deep at the start of the canyon. it gets narrower and narrower... the boat turns around when the walls close in. The canyon then rises out the water and into the desert where we get to visit it.
was a good ride if yr there for a few days... and obviously Horseshoe Bend is right there also.

I made the trip 2 years ago. Unfortunately is was during Spring Break. I did the regular tour because some non photo friends were along. It was a zoo!. I felt sorry for the photographers tour...they were there at the same time. The Navajo guides were trying to clear the way for them. The young tourists and their #$%* selphie sticks were getting in the way. You should have heard what the guide was going to do with their sticks. I did get some good shots w/o a tripod. I would not consider going there on Spring Break (Feb. -Mar.),,,it was way too crowded. Fortunately I only live a few hours from there and can go anytime.

You can make reservations with - https://www.navajoantelopecanyon.com/Photo.asp. I used them 3 times. 3 years ago I paid $85.00 for the Photographer Tour for the Upper canyon, now they charge $130.00 per person. I would not recommend the General Public tour, it's a Zoo. I had a Full Frame camera and tripod. Since you don't wan't to change lenses in the canyon, I would recommend a zoom lens from 16mm to 70mm range for a full frame. On the last visit I took mostly (3) shot HDR's at 1000 ISO - f/8 and shutter was never more than 3sec. Make sure you get some photos with the floor of the canyon included, those are my best photos.

The Zion ban is workshops and just on trails. It really isn't much different than what they've had in the past.

Was in Lower Antelope a few months ago, did the photo tour and the guides did a nice job of giving you a bit of time at the best spots. I used a 10-18 zoom and it was great.

Personally I would also recommend Horseshoe Slot Canyon, Not as big as Antelope but a very nice canyon and small groups. They basically just said go shoot! Great fun!
