As a person who works with middle school girls, I am happy to see CVS's decision. It is a step in the right direction. I have seen what teenage girls go through...having 3 of them myself and also working with others. I am noticing that most of the posters here are adult men who never lived in the teenage girl world. It is amazing to me to see the body shaming, the put-downs, the meanness that goes on every day, mostly through social media. There are horrible suicides at nearby schools due to bullying or shaming. I'm not saying CVS's decision is going to change all that. And altering an advertising image is completely different than altering your own images. Who care if CVS alters white balance or not? What we're talking about here is altering reality. And that altered reality can affect the woman/teenage population quite a bit. Some can handle it, some can't. Some are realistic, some aren't. I know I'd rather see a normal looking person in an ad than some 90 pound Photoshopped fake. But that's who kids want to look like. I don't worry as much about how adults perceive an ad. They're adults and can make up their own mind. But teenage girls (and now, even younger), believe what they see. Let CVS try this and see how it works. Maybe it'll do someone some good.

Well said, says the 60 something white guy, with no daughters. Now I do like real, fit women -say Lindsay Vonn, but also others that have a much different body style - say Michelle Obama. We do not want to have people try to fit themselves into the world as Hollywood or the fashion industry sees it. It frequently ends badly.

I certainly did not read all 11 pages of this drivel, so maybe somewhere in there someone splashed a bit of common sense. What ever happened to individual responsibility? "Big Brother" at his baddest: "you poor miserable individuals, can't make a determination on your own. I'll tell you what to believe, I'll tell you what the truth is, I'll regulate your whole life". Geez, people, get a grip!!

Amen.

Hahaha, probably because they're made of plastic? You never see anyone actually biting into one.

All said and done, I find it rather ironic that we run out and spend several thousand bucks for the very best camera and lenses then run home PS every damn one of the images we capture...

Alas the add man cometh and soon reality is difficult to discern.

I have tired considerably of this increasingly used and abused tactic of discounting the opinions of a certain segment of our society. To wit: The feelings, need, wants and opinions of "older white guys" are to be automatically dismissed. This archaic drivel is becoming louder and louder. I've recently rewatched a few older TV mini-series - "The Winds of War," "War and Remembrance," and "Masada" and have seen quite a lot of vivid documentation of what governments and nations of this world did to Jewish people. Frighteningly enough, the arguments in support of this gross discrimination, as articulated by those in power during two different periods of our history, seem to be quite close to those views presented by those who today are out to downplay and dismiss "older white guys." Oprah Winfrey said during a televised interview that "older white folks just have to die." At the time, I thought it was a stupid statement. Now, I begin to wonder when some on the left will start to advocate concentration camps or reeducation camps for all us "older white guys."

Seems that "older white guy" has become the new N*****.

I apologize for interjecting this into this apparently unrelated thread, but it appears that the original intent of the OP was diluted and dismantled long ago. And methinks it's time for those who do not accept the "progressive," PC view of this society to begin to speak up.

Maybe that is what I was doing, as an older white guy, speaking up. And if I get into trouble I have some very fierce women that have my back. Where does that leave us?

thats what I said the difference is we let the camera software decide I sure like doing my own adjustments so that it comes out as what I saw when I took the shot.

Your jpeg has been manipulated also, just in-camera as the photographer has the camera set up.

I am a 70 year old white guy - I think that qualifies me for OWG status.

So, how does being sensitive to the needs of others hurt us???

I have a wife and two daughters.
How does being sensitive to the needs of people like them hurt us??

This is not a zero sum game.
We don't lose by enabling them to have healthy self-images.

Well spoken, but it misses the point of my admittedly off-topic comment.

No more ironic than spending a boatload on the fanciest camera only to run out and drop even more on a fancy lens.

Yep. Educating people on media literacy and fact-checking is what is needed, not warning labels on photos.

I get this point of view, but I disagree. I have 3 overweight daughters. They have always been comfortable with their appearance and felt no pressure to get in shape. Isn't that the crux of these objections slanted towards "realistic" appearance? Maybe a little peer pressure towards slimness is a good thing? Maybe the ideal SHOULD be slanted towards "in shape" not "couch potato", which we are seeing a lot of on YouTube now.
Look at your icon and mine. Who would you buy from if you were under 50? Without makeup and my orange halo I look just like you. A fairly good looking guy for 70 (which We are), but I'd loose half my sales to people not trusting someone who is senile and over the hill.
If fat folks don't want to compete in life then get comfortable where you're at, but why should I quit doing sit-ups because You think I'm making some young chick feel bad? 60% of our children are overweight, but have better self esteem than Chinese kids. The government, nor public opinion can legislate morality, nor good health no matter how hard they try. I create art/pics and TV the way I want life to be. If I wanted actual reality I'd do Hitler pics. He was in pretty good shape without photoshop.
(sorry I can't agree with you. I really am!)
Donald Jetman is a Vice President of Atlantic Cable Network. acn.one and acn news. none of which is "Reality TV". at least not the part I produce.
PS. Mr. Swanda, (the post before this one) should we depend on making things appear Worse than they really are? or isn't "Worse" the opposite of "Better" anymore? This was a fun topic tho. Wasn't it?
