Why does it take to be a great photographer?

It seems to me that on a DSLR one can set shutter speed and aperture in Manual mode and select an ISO (your ASA). So I don't understand these type of posts I guess.

While at first blush, I agree with Tomad ... but ... How many of today's photogs - including some very good ones - know the "sunny sixteen" rule, as an example? How I would love to take my Canon A1 and adapt a digital back to it. Shutter speed...aperture...ASA. Use the built-in meter, read the scene, make adjustments (to include focus), and "zoom with your feet". Yeah, much simpler than now, but while I am one of those old farts, I am really happy about what is out there for equipment now, and while I'm not as quick about learning it as I used to be I am sure happy about what it can do.

To respond to Lee's original questions:
1) Yes. But most of us aren't
2) I'll respond further down
3) No. But good equipment helps
4) Something we have to live with. Some people are like that.
Now,
2) My adult granddaughter is quite a photographer and has built a nice, useful, kit and portfolio. HER 5-year old daughter received a Fuji Instax for Christmas because she showed an interest in "takin' pixers". Bragging aside, she has an eye for composition: She will move her subjects (including humans) around, get closer if necessary, and will take three or four shots before she'll show us that "this one is best", following what we call the various "rules of composition". What scares me, is that she probably has a better ratio of keepers than I do!!! (It may be that now, with digital, I can take a *lot* more to get that keeper LOL)
But there are some people who have a great eye, just as some who play the drums have no sense of rhythm, and some who drive cars got their license on Amazon. I really hope she is one of the first category.
While at first blush, I agree with Tomad ... but .... (show quote)

See my previous thread / post - it has little to do with any of the above

1 - Yes
2 - No, but one does need to have a thorough understanding of the photographic process from start to finish to be able to achieve the photograph they wish to make.
3 - Yes. It's very difficult to make a really fine photograph using cheap or inferior equipment.
4 - Not much.

Rude comments can be entertaining, and inciteful; and might be more meaningful than patronizing comments.

Yeah. Easy for YOU to say, you're warm and near a beach. Try being old, and cold, and told May is months away!

1) Yes, potentially; except him, he's a jerk.
2) No. That was way back in the Olden Times. They were all geniuses. Then someone invented the "P"(hd) mode, and now anyone can do it!
3) Not from what I hear. Better equipment takes better pictures ("Wow! That's great! You must have a really good camera. I studied photography for awhile blah, blah, blah...") but I've never heard of a camera making coffee, much less a great photographer. I think that's still left to the parents.
4) Because my brain is trying to find different angles of approach to each bit of input. Often rude is just a step in that process. What's it to you? What you lookin' at, expletive?
5) what was the question?
6) x7=42

1) Anyone who owns a camera can take a great image if they work hard and perhaps get lucky... otherwise it like asking can anyone with proper tools build a house.

2) Doubtful... but unless a fluke image is great... you need to be able to discern impactful imagery when its if front of you or just have the stars align for your luck.

3) Better equipment at minimum allows those more technically challenged to at minimum have a much better chance of their images being in focus and properly exposed.

4) When you have learned to recognize "great" photography, the only thing that matters is what you think of your own work... on your own level of "greatness" relative to what you know you are capable of. “A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words.” – Ansel Adam The humility of Ansel Adams ...“Sometimes I do get to places just when God’s ready to have somebody click the shutter.” – Ansel Adams.

No, no, no, as far as rude goes that might just be in the eye of the beholder. Their intention might not be to be rude to help in a constructive way if you do not fawn all over what they say you could be classified as rude or inept or stupid. We would never progress without constructive criticism.

Drop the pebble in the pond grasshopper! :)
1 - yes
2 - no
3 - no, unless you gear is really of poor quality
4 - Rude comments only apply to rude questions.

Shall we also cover the meaning of life? :)

Who determines great? Some of the old master were not great until after the died. I have know idea what is great. I know what is pleasing to my eye. I try not to be rude but sometimes I just can't help myself. Happy shooting.

1. Can anyone that owns a camera be a great photographer ?
YES, with the proper attitude and work ethic.

2) Do you need to be a super intelligent (PHD) person or not?
NO. In fact it is an impediment. I know PHD's who can't negotiate their way out out of a urine-soaked spreadsheet who expect their inferiors to bail them out.

3) Does better equipment make a better photographer?
NO. It's a poor craftsman who blames his tools.

4) Why do you think of rude comments?
Some people deserve one every now and then.
