Im vacationing in Longboat Key, FL. I've got shots of the beach where we are staying but was wondering if anyone knew of any good photo spots near here.
I used to live in Sarasota and there is a park, Myakka State Park, that I loved to take wildlife pictures at. It's out east of Sarasota on, I think, St Rt 72. There is also a little park at the other side of St Armands Circle on the gulf.
If you like bird shots try the rookery in Venice.
Follow the main road in Longboat Key north. Go over to Anna Maria Island, to the far north end. There is a good place to eat on the fishing pier there and you are at the mouth of Tampa Bay.
Selby Gardens and The Ringling Museum.
You did not say what type of photography you are interested in, I live in Sarasota and sadly this time of year the birding is not good. Try the Ringling museum, free on Monday's, North Longboat and Anna Marie Island may have some birding opportunities. There are Royal Terns around, you have to look for them. The Marinas have some nice shots, you may want to look at Cortez. Not much at the rookery this time of year. Myakka SP is always interesting, but less birds and wildlife, lots of water though with all of the rain we have been having. Try to see Siesta Key Public Beach, voted the best beach in America this past year, white sugar sand, may be packed with all of the rain as well, but beautiful. PM me if you want more information or directions, I could call you as well. Gary

Thanks everyone for the replies. Going to go driving today at some of the suggestions. Gonna try siesta key, too. I have gps so I'll just follow that around :) I'm looking for some good bird shots - maybe some sea animals, too (like dolphins or manatees if they hang around here). I went to Cortez yesterday to eat and got some real good rustic shots of the old fishing boats and (what I assume to be) crab pots.
Tim
Tim, Not much happening today with the rain. As far as manatees and dolphins, you are better off charetering a boat and going out into the bay or gulf. I think LaBarge has a dolphin cruise (out of Marina Jack), but may not with the weather, suppose to get drier starting tomorrow. I wish I had better news. Enjoy the area, St. Armand's and Lido are interesting areas as well. There are some antique shops in the downtown Sarasota area, which may make for interesting photos as well. Gary
I miss Longboat Key. Loved going there. Sold our condo at The Colony (fortunately) when we saw "the writing on the wall".
What a tangled web that place is in. Very sad.

Just as you are leaving the Keys heading north, you will see the signs for the Everglades National Park about 20 miles west of the highway. After entering the park the first "attraction" is a boardwalk about 1 to 1 1/2 miles long where you will have hundreds of photo ops of alligators, herons, and many other different species of birds. It's an easy level stroll and really beautiful. We figured an hour and ended up spending the entire afternoon. Check it out!
Wrong key, Longboat is located onthe west coast, just south of Tampa, near Sarasota.

One of my favorite spots in that area (we vacation around there too) is Ft. DeSoto Park, which is on the southern tip of the Tampa peninsula. (It's north of you from Longboat Key.) The park is quite big and has numerous points of interest for great photos.
