My new 70-300 refurb arrived today and I'm happy with the new lens. It's an upgrade from my 70-200 workhorse and though now made in China vs Thailand it seems to be a very nice piece of glass.

As a comparison I shot 100 asa F8 250th/350th on both shots.

FYI the old lens is for sale.....

I saw a very interesting article by (I think it was) Joe McNally. He was evidently on a trip with several photographer/photo writers to visit Nikon's manufacturing plants in Japan and Asia. He said that originally, he was very skeptical of lenses that were manufactured in communist China. He stated that his group went into a couple of factories in Japan and as the group stood at the edge of the plant looking down on the floor, he saw several assembly technicians looking up at them with curiosity. These people continued to look around as they assembled lenses. He said that he really didn't give it much thought until they visited a couple of factories in China. These had workers on the assembly floor making lenses but as they watched, the workers would only glance at them then back to what they were working on.. There were armed guards in various areas around the room which sort of chilled him. BUT, after the reporters left, he thought about the experience and said, "I think that if I was buying an expensive lens, I would want it to be made by the person who's life depended on him concentrating on what he was doing and not busy looking around at distractions. If I figures/knew that if the lens I was assembling wasn't right, that my life might be forfeit, I would probably make SURE that everything I did was absolutely correct."
Initially, he said he was disturbed by the "use of slave labor". Then he decided that the workers here were probably better off than if they were working in some chemical plant or farmer's field.

And with luck the guns were to keep the product in house vs the quality high.... The Japanese tend to be curious by nature the Chinese just a different breed due to freedoms denied.

I would have liked to have seen a comparison at 200mm. Apples to apples.
The first image here is the sharper of the two

I agree the first image is sharper, but the sharpest focus point is on the Postal truck in the background of the first photo.

Yes, the point of focus is different between the two also. However even considering that I feel the 1st is sharper. Is the 70-300 as sharp at 200?

how can you compare , they are 2 different images , about same shot with the 2 lenses ?
