If I were buying a Nikon high resolution camera now, I'd buy the current model. That's a no-brainer. I bought a D810 in 2015 and won't be "upgrading" because I don't need the speed of the D850 or the better DX mode. As for the increased number of megapixels, I don't think it would make any difference to me. My lenses seem to set the limit on detail with the D810.

MT shooter posted in another thread that Nikon USA had them in stock and - as of this moment - they still seem to:

I have the d810 and the d500 . So the d850 is basically the d500 version of the d810. Wait for the d850 you will be glad you did .
People will have all the comments like " you haven't probably completely mastered all the abilities of your current camera " blah blah bla.
The d850 with its latest processor and autofocus system runs circles around the d810 . The ability to lock focus faster and more accurately is hands down worth the wait.
I enjoy using my d500 so much more than the sluggish d810. With that being said i now find myself using the 810 more and more over the 500. The ff picture quality in low light is just hands down better. No if and or buts about it .
I shoot live music photography in a lot of small dark clubs. After looking through thousands upon thousands of raw files the d810 is better.
A friend just got the d850 and had the d810 he is really liking the 850 files over the 810
I have the d810 and the d500 . So the d850 is basi... (show quote)

I agree with most of what you say, but I'm not convinced that my D850 has better low light performance than my D500. The D500 seems to have less noise at any given ISO and has a native ISO one stop higher than the D850. I'm up in the air as to which camera I'll use at a concert I photograph every year that frequently has (to be polite) sub optimal lighting. that said the D850 is far superior to my old D3 in every way.

I'm interested in buying a full frame camera. I want to see if there are any new announcements at the upcoming CES show Jan. 9-12. The D750 was announced in Sept. 2014. I'm wondering if its replacement will be announced at the show. It's known that Nikon is replacing the 200-400mm f/4 lens. The new one is supposed to be a 180-400mm f/4. That may be announced at the show.

Being a long time user of Nikon. (D100, D2X, D3, D4, D5 and now the D850) I ordered on mine on the 18th of Dec. and received it on the 21st of Dec. from Adorama. I have gotten into shooting panoramas, most of the time I am using 9 to 12 frames to compose my pano of 24" by 72" and bought the 850 for 45 megapixels for the D5 is only a 20 megapixel camera. The ISO range on the D850 does not come close to the D5 when it comes to low light conditions. With the 850 at ISO 100 I have a much larger image to work with and able to maintain the quality in my prints. Yes I print my own on a Canon iPF8400 and it does a great job. Two things to think about, lens make the picture and what I mean by that is buy the best lens made not the one you think you can afford. Sure you may need to save for a longer period of time but it is well worth the time. The lens makes the body not the other way around. Buy the body to capture the picture your after. My reason for buying the D5 was I shoot a lot of high school football at night and most of the time under very poor lighting. ISO 4000 on the D5 there is very little noise I can not say the same for the 850 under the same conditions. Put a so so lens out front and you will get a so so picture no matter what body you use. Put the best lens out front and you will get the best picture the body can deliver. Sold the D2X but still using the D3, 4 and 5. Sorry about the grammar but I barely made it out of high school.

I was considering the D810 due to my impatience, but I decided to wait until the D850 supply is more plentiful....I think it's worth to wait rather than spring for the D810, which is also a very good camera. I would be leery of recent models on eBay and a lot of grey market pushers seem to post there. I like the idea of refurbished through "ABC" but there are not a lot of refurbished D850s these days :)

That's a great question. I guess a lot of people think that will improve their photography. Most probably haven't exceeded the capabilities of their current camera.

Good point Bob....I've been doing Photography for about 58 years and have yet to find a camera that exceeds my own capability in the important aspects of the endeavor. I have most certainly have fallen prey to the myth that the next camera will improve my images. Having put that myth aside, I have known for some time that I am the photographer.... not the camera.

I doubt that the 850 would do more for me, and cannot imagine such expenditures would enhance my skills any more than judicious application of all the finer points of photography. Limitations by not fully using the tools already in your bag is foolhardy expenditure indeed.

The camera industry has us by our nuts with their continual withholding of engineering they could have put in previous models so easily. Better to spend the money on more learning, more practice and more travel to worthy subject sites.

I had an 810 which I absolutely loved. I have had my 850 for about 4 months my advice is to wait for the 850 you wont be sorry! I sold the 810 3 days after I got the 850.

The D810 is awesome and I had no complaints, that being said, I sold my D810 to buy the D850. The increased megapixels wasn’t a factor for me. There’s several othe features to the D850 that for me, was worth making the change.

Steve, excellent Nikon AF info you have put out. Thanks. Nikon D850- try Kenmore Camera in Washington State. Great place, honest people, excellent stock on hand, generally speaking. Looks like it is on order there too, at the moment.

NikonUSA briefly had stock and shipped some last week, but is backordered again. New D850s are coming slowly through the production pipeline, with demand remaining high. Adorama has about 300 orders on their waiting list, and I would imagine B&H has a similar backlog. I was watching to see if massive numbers of bodies were forthcoming, but that is not the case. I put a preorder in at B&H last week, and they have no information about when stock will arrive, they are just filling orders in the sequence of the waiting list. My credit card is not charged until the body is available to ship. There is another issue out there, and that is xqd cards. Longsys, the company that acquired Lexar from Micron, will be producing lexar cards again. Right now, only Sony has xqd cards available. I was able to pre-order a 128 gb lexar with a usb reader for $159, but who knows when it will arrive.

If I have to guess, I think a 6-8 week timeline is expected on the D850. The question I have for the original thread poster is what lenses does he have with his D750?

The D810 is a wondrful camera. I was fortunate to get a D850 early on…and, I love it. However, I fell while on a night shoot and almost destroyed the D850. I had to send it off to Nikon for extensive repairs. Meanwhile, I had a couple of important shoots and I was reminded of how good the D810 really is. You'll never go wrong with a D810. Another meanwhile, I just got my D850 last evening. It looks like a brand new camera.
