As of Jan 2018 a Canon EF 2x extender cannot be used with any EOS body and an EF 100-400L I or II lens and retain Auto Focus. Thanks Paul for you're explanation and advice, I appreciate it. At least I now know there isn't anything 'wrong' with the extender, just me. (I bought it used, but like new, on eBay.)
Extenders / tele-converters have been an active topic in 2017. It's unfortunate you made a purchase without catching all the technical details and limitations to their use. A 1.4x III with your 100-400L II is an excellent configuration. Hopefully, you can make the switch from the 2x to 1.4x with the minimum of effort and loss of investment.

Instead of switching from live view to viewfinder, try manually focusing through the viewfinder. Your camera may even have a focus confirmation.

Focus confirmation is normally restricted to the same limitations as autofocus in my own experience.

Why?
The EF 100-400L zoom models have variable maximum aperture values at different focal lengths. At 100mm for the mark II lens, the maximum aperture is f/4.5. With a 2x converter, the maximum aperture is f/9. Your specific 80D User Manual documents f/8 as the minimum aperture needed for autofocus on this model. The same User Manual also lists out the all various lenses and the converter models supported by this EOS body. Refer to Section 3 - Setting the AF and Drive Modes, starting on page 115.
You should exchange the 2x for a 1.4x III or return for refund.

Explained very well. I have the 100-400, the 1.4 and the 2x. 1.4 works. 2x does not.

I might try that for a while but I can see trading the 2X for a 1.4X in the future. Thanks for the help.
Do it now, get a refund - rather than later and sell it as used

I would return it but I bought it used on eBay. Think I'll experiment with it a while then sell or trade it for the 1.4x.
But thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah Jim...we live and learn. But looking on the bright side, I'm just glad the 2.0x wasn't defective.

So long as you have other lenses to use it on....

Of course if you ever get a EF 70-200mm f/2.8 II, the 2X Extender will be a good match.

Ok, I think I finally understand. But I did find out that while using the 2X you can focus in 'Live View', then switch to MF and compose thru the view finder.

I hope that you understand that you purchased the wrong extender, the 2X extenders will only autofocus fast lenses, f/2.8's and f/4's. I have the same lens you have and use the 1.4 Extender III on it and it works very well, I track eagles and other birds in flight with no problems.

Yes, I now understand. Even thought it won't AF I can still MF for the main reason I bought the 2.0. (See attached photo.) This was taken with my T4i (before I got an 80D) using the 100-400 ll.
But as I stated in a previous post, I'll experiment with the 2.0 for a while then probably sell it and get the 1.4.
Have you posted any of your BIF ?

A couple of thoughts on what to do about the 2.0x:
First, owning a 2.0x can prove to be useful when you rent an AF compatible lens. Only you can decide if holding this equipment for
potential future use is justified. For the past few summers I've rented an EF 500 f/4L IS II for the annual airshow in Chicago. As much as I lust for a copy of this lens, I can't justify the expense of owning. I eventually found a used EF 300 f/2.8L IS II for purchase that I use extensively alone and with either the 1.4x and 2.0x. Some recent BIF shared on UHH @ an extended 600mm:
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-505474-1.htmlhttp://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-505387-1.htmlContinuing with the 2.0x and EF 500 for airshows, I didn't distinguish the individual lens in the linked images, but the single planes in the two posts will tend to be @ an extended 1000mm. The EXIF data from the Flickr page confirms the exact configuration:
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-481836-1.htmlhttp://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-482104-1.htmlFinally, I use the 1.4x III with every AF compatible lens possible, though most typically a 135L, the 300L above and the 100-400L II. The 100-400L II combo is wonderful as referenced in an earlier comment. The final Thunderbird image from Cleveland in the link below is an example, as well as others in the link. There's more examples in the Photo Gallery, typically from zoos, that can be found by clicking my user name and then the link topics created, looking for topics in the Photo Gallery.
