A good reason to keep your tank FULL , It don't cost a penny more to keep your tank full than it does to keep it empty.

Actually it does. At 6 pounds per gallon, a 25 gallon fuel load weighs 150lbs. This extra load impacts your gas mileage. For optimum gas mileage keep your tank below one quarter all the time. Then in Oregon, you visit your full service station a lot more often and give work to the highly trained gas filling specialist. Tip him or her well.

Sitting here feeling smug as our local County, Josephine County, has a population of over 85,000! Seriously, back in the old country everyone fills their own (petrol) tanks. Or they did so where I used to live in England prior to 2008.

Well, in the real old times they not only pumped your gas but washed your windows and checked your oil, and sometimes gave you a free glass. And they didn’t need a law to tell them to do it.

I suspect most Oregonians would rather pump their own gas. The liberals treat it as a job program...and unfortunately Oregon has more Californicators than they need. The liberal press reports what supports their program as if it were news: aka fake news.

Alas, they are now flowing to Idaho.

Was that the head gasket? That would have been an expensive repair job.

There was a little hue and cry made huge by the fake news industry.

I miss having someone else pump my gas. I would gladly pay an extra 5 cents a gallon for that service to provide employment for someone in need of a job. I am old enough to remember the gas station attendant checking your oil and tire pressure while you were getting gas.

Then they had both self service and full service islands wher you could choose to pay extra to have your gas pumped if you were too lazy to do it yourself. Collected the people who stand still on moving walkways.

Leaving it up to station owners and customers isn’t in the liberals communist mind-set.

Years of fighting with big brother was needed just to pump my own gas in my motorcycle. Finely got permissions when threatened with lawsuits for repairing or replacing paint ruined by a pump jockey that wasn't careful. Finally got proper permissions to pump but legally had to have pump jocky remove nozzle and set up pump. Most usually ignored that detail. It has been a REAL pain to not at least have the option of pumping your own gas. Ironically gas prices in Washington (where you pump your own) were always higher than in Oregon where you were not allowed to touch the pump. I was always told that it was that way due to who would be responsible for accidents while pumping gas. And to those who wonder there are NO full service stations. All they do is pump gas!

I can also fill my diesel pickup without waiting for the attendant to finish his smoke.

I really don't see what the big fuss is all about. The law doesn't say the full service stations have to close, they can remain open and do business as usual.

Back in the 70s when the switchover to self-serve started, there was quite a bit of pandemonium because the stations were not designed for self serve and there was no electronics to speak of. Over time, stations evolved to the SS paradigm and the design is radically different now compared to 45 years ago. I suspect OR will face the same issues but the transition should be much faster since the rest of the world has a lot of experience.

Think of all the work needed for updating the OR gas stations. Lots of jobs.

I can remember my first business trip to Oregon years ago.....pulling the rental up to the pump, getting out and walking around the rear of the car...opening the fuel cover and unscrewing the cap.
Took a step toward the pump, swiped my card, gabbed the nozzle with my right hand, reset the pump with my left.....one step back to the car and in the 'hole' the nozzel went.....

With the attendant running from the building at me, waving both hands in the air, shouting " You can do that, you can do that!"

When he got to the vehicle, the gas flowing, I simply replied...." I can't, why not? Seems I already have." I did let him hold the nozzle while he explained Oregon's law on gas fillups. I remember just laughing and thinking to myself what a stupid law.

From then on in Oregon, I just let the local attendants fill the tank for me, while addng an extra half hour to the itinerary.

Did not know Jersey was the same....guess I definately won't be visiting there for that and other equally brilliantly thought out laws.

Warning to those new to self-pumping! No self pumping in NJ and about a year ago a friend of mine who doesn't drive out of state much was driving his new car South and stopped in Delaware for gas. He filled the tank, started on his way and the car died about 100 yards outside the gas station. He had the car towed to the closest dealership and found out he had filled the car with diesel. He says that he just went to an available pump at the gas station and filled the tank.
I always thought there was something in place that would prevent this...other than the sign on the pump...that the nozzles were different size, color, etc. He said it looked just like all the other pumps and he didn't notice the price difference. An expensive mistake!

Diesel pumps have Green handles. It just shows how unobservant people are about what goes on around them.

where we live in PA it's not to far to get to NJ, the other day we were getting low and since 1, we were by the state border 2, it was colder than an Alaskan privy and 3, the full on latches on the nozzles often are broken here, we crossed over to the dark side.

Getting back to the OP. Do people from Oregon travel out side of their state? ever? B4 you leave at least find out where the gas cap is! Which begs the question for those who claimed they don't even know where that is, how the hell did you learn how to line up at the pump?

As far as self service lowering prices, if you buy that I have some water front property in AZ you should be interested in. The first thing I can remember along that line is MacDonald's saying they don't have waiters so they can keep the price down and oh by the way clean up after yourself to keep those prices down. Relativity speaking that didn't work either. And we still stand in line like we're in the military and we still clean up after ourselves.

And the nozzle is fatter so it shouldn't have fit

If the driver had NEVER pumped his own gas before, he would not know to look for that. It's not stupidity, it's sheer raw ignorance.

We don't know that. Since in OR you have to have a specialist pump your gas, they may not have these differences.

One of the biggest positives to "pumping your own". Not waiting for an attendant.
