Guys & Gals,

I recently purchased a Canon 7D Refurbished from B&H (w/Canon Warranty). I'm still trying to figure out the autofocus system. I shot these at the Pittsburgh, PA Zoo. I shot in RAW w/AF Point Expansion since the critter wouldn't settle down. I set the WB at cloudy as you can see from Photo #3. They've been cropped & juiced in PSE10. PLEASE tell me where I screwed the pooch.

PD

Always check the box for "store original" when asking for critique. That allows people to get all your camera settings so they can see exactly what you did. That will help you get more replies too. I like what I see with the tiger. Seems in focus and very cute.

I see no issues with focusing with the limited size of the image. Maybe post the exposures again but check "Store Original" so we can view them bigger.

For some reason, my connection keeps timing out when I try to attach the full file.

Looking good. The second shot looks like focus might have been on the blades of grass instead of the eye of the tiger. Still pretty sharp though.

But yes, lens, focal distance and aperture might have something to do with it. Did you do test shots with your lenses to find their sweet spots?

DJ,

Actually, no I didn't. These were shot with a 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L that I normally leave on a tripod. For the zoo it was handheld. I shot these at 400mm wide open at 5.6. Figures, I got my 70mm-200mm f4.0 L the day after from B&H.

Go to your 7D's menu and find "AF Point Display", select "enable" (default setting is "off"). This will show exactly where your camers was focused when the pic was taken. My 60D has this option - probably on the 7D also.

Hi I have the 7D too got it new but anyway looking at your pictures, what do you think is wrong with them, maybe alittle to much shallow DOF but other then that they look ok to me But thats just my opinion

JS,

You may be right on about the DOF. I used a 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L zoom wide open. With a long telephoto zoom, DOF gets iffy in any case and at f4.5, I may have short changed myself. Thanks for the input.

The smoke from the tower is really amazing. You are able to capture detail. It's tremendous.

Ruby,

Thanks, but I just included it to show the cloudiness I was dealing with at the zoo. This one may be a little better of an indicator.
