Today my D810 will not format the cards.
on the screen The " format card" is grayed out.
Can't find anything in the book as to why its grayed out.
I dontknow if there is a setting that stops it from being formatted.
Since I posted this, I had the USB cable plugged in as I moved pix to the computer.
When I removed the cable I can now format the cards. I had no idea this would be a problem
its fixed. yea

you might try to re seat the card
Did you accidentally slide the write protect tab on the card?

Possibly a corrupted card. Try another card and see if the same thing happens. If so, try resetting camera.
On my cameras, formating is not allowed if the battery is below a certain level.

and the answer is..... I had the USB cable plugged in. When I removed the cable the format card is no longer grayed out. I really didn't know this would be the problem

Switch cards and switch cameras.

Good grief!
I'm guessing the cord was connected to your computer also?
Thanks for the update. It might save me from scratching my head some day.

I never use a cable to upload to my computer. i always use a card reader. It is much faster.
When you have the USB cable conected, you loose some function on the camera. You need to disconnect the USB when formatting the card.
Damn! that does sound snarky. I didn't mean it that way and apologize.

Yes, this is true of many devices that have a file system and are connected to a PC. Most phones will disable some file operations when connected to the PC, Giving file operation priority to the PC rather than the device. (Phone,Camera.. ETC.). Disconnecting will return control to the device.
