Get the Adobe Photographers package (Lightoom and Photoshop) for $10 per month. Nothing to beat either program.

Suggest you find training classes, particularly for Photoshop.

Affinity Photo is truly fantastic. And, it is only a one-time purchase of $39.95. Gimp is great also, but I don't think it can handle RAW files.

I use Lightroom as much for organising my files as I do for most basic editing tasks. This holiday break, I finally got around to reducing the 100,000 images (maybe 3 terabytes) I had accumulated, by selecting, editing the best (keepers) and then blithely deleting the rest. LR made this tolerable (not easy!) by quickly marking images as '5 start' or 'x'. I now have a sense of winning, and expect to reduce my database of images from the current 60,000 ish to around 20,000. I am learning the art of culling. Many of the best (best is a relative term, I mean best of mine) are at http://rjbwild.net.

It's not easy at first, but worth persevering. I have become comfortable with the Northups's YoiTube style and learn a lot from them.

The DAM aspect of LR is my most important reason for using it. LR itself is a pretty good editor, but the handshaking with PS makes the combination the best for me.

About 3 years ago I spent about 4-6 weeks doing what you have been doing. In my early digital days I kept different versions of edited files and a lot of duplicates and other junk. In addition to culling stuff (60,000 -> 18,000) I took the time to add keywords to the older files that I had put into the system before I really learned how to keyword things. Keywording adds a lot of value to the archives and makes it possible to find photos I've forgotten I took.

I have now incorporated culling and keywording into my workflow to keep things real. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/user-page?upnum=1584

I used Luminar then Luminar 2018 but wasn’t pleased with it. I am now in enrolled in one of our local university’s arts program/camera class. I just purchased Lightroom/Photoshop as it is a prerequisite for the class. The same Prerequisite was listed for both major art institutes in my city. Interesting that all three schools are private and courses cost about the same. None of the local community colleges offered a camera program.

That's a helpful document, and I recognise many of the elements :-)

I didn't know this:

'I should note that Lightroom has the capability of renaming files at import time.'

and will make use of that in future. ('was this near the Arenal volcano or in Selva Verde?' is not so easily answered twow eyears later!

Was going to write the same thing. Without knowing what and how you shoot, it is difficult to say.

I see you just joined UHH yesterday. Just a tip: when replying to a post if you use "quote reply" rather than "reply", people can tell which post you're replying to. Only important if you are answering a question posted by someone else or commenting on a specific post.

I used "quote reply" here, so you see the name of the person I'm directing this post to.

This is a similar question to: what is the best camera?

The answer is the same: both are as good as the person operating them.

That is why you will see work of art AND snapshots with identical gear.

Good luck though. For features, PS/LR is pretty unbeatable.

IMHO, Lightroom Classic CC is not only the best, but the most widely used. (Includes Photoshop). All others are judged against this industry standard. Not for everyone, but still the most versatile, the most functional, the most universal and the most used. Just my little 'ol opinion, 's-all! Best of luck.

Good question asked and answered many times. I'd use the search feature and read away.

The one you invest TIME into learning. The one that yields results YOU want.

There are many good ones. But your time learning and practicing is as important as which one you choose.
