When turned on you should be able to hear it, it will make a clicking sound as the camera is moved even if it is only a slight movement. Hope this helps.

And the image in your viewfinder will be stabilized.

thanks a lot......in continuous focusing mode, how do I know the difference between the refocusing sounds and the VR sound?

Let the camera autofocus first so the image in the viewfinder in sharp. Then look through the viewfinder without depressing the shutter button and then press the shutter button half-way down. You should be able to see that the image getting more stable.

I tend to expect something is working unless I have evidence to the contrary

I've seen that with mirrorless but never with a DSLR. Maybe it's because I can hold my camera rock steady.

Ironically, my photos are sharper with VR shut off. Could it be that I'm not jiggling my camera enough when I shoot to activate the VR? Anyone else out there with this problem?

Interesting observation. I'm going to do some test shots with IS on and off on my 80D and see what I think. My nifty fifty does not have IS and my shots with it are sharp.

Working or not, I never trust any VR - and lenses that have it have been optically compromised.

Not true at all, at least with the VR lenses I have or have had.
