Happy New Year fellow shutterbugs! Santa was kind enough to bring me a Nikon D5500 with AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR this year. As a realtor, I'd love to get an additional wide angle lens to capture interior shots that show a larger portion of the room. Any suggestions? I'm not really in the mood to spend $200-300 just yet until I'm more comfortable with the new gear. Do any of the less expensive conversion lens I see work at all? I'm not a total newbie, but have no experience with wide angle lenses. Thanks!

I suggest you learn to stitch panoramas and get a Nodal Ninja head. The results will be better than an ultra wide lens. And $200-$300 is not going to get you much.

I have a Tamron 10-24mm f3.5-4. which gives fov of 15-36mm. That should meet your needs. I have the original version which you should be able to find used for $250 or less. Check B&H, Ebay and KEH. The new version, which I understand is an improvement over the original version runs $399 for the Nikon version. I think you'd be happy with either version. I do like mine. If you could spring for the new version, however, I would go for it. I know for sure that the new version has a focusing motor in it. I'd have to research further to verify that for the original version. One thing you would like is the flexibility of the zoom aspect of this lens.

If, however, you prefer a prime, I'd go with either an 18mm or 20mm Nikon prime.

I have the new version of the 10-24. It is a very good DX lens in my opinion.

Happy New Year, Luv ....

Best bet is the Tamron SP 10-24 VC HLD ... lists at $499 ... but you may be able to find it for less ... Google it!

The older Tamron SP 10-24 can be picked up for less, but it doesn't have stabilization ...

Either one should work fine with the Nikon D5500 ... great camera! (I have it!) ... inexpensive wide angle lens (I have the older version!) ....

Take a look at the Samyang 8mm f3.5. It's pretty basic, manual focus and stop down, but at f8, everything's going to be in focus anyway.

Isn't that a fisheye, though, Wellhiem?

Being as you have a D5500 there is no focus motor in the body but, if you don't mind manual focus I'd recommend Nikon's 20mm f/2.8d it's in your 300 dollar range where as the latest version f1.8g is in the 700 dollar range.

OP has an 18-55mm lens already, so I doubt that a 20mm f/2.8 prime meets his wish. A better option would seem to be the 12-28mm Tokina f/4.0. I believe B&H has it on sale now for $240.

Totally agree. I have this lens and although I don't use it often, every time I do I'm amazed at the results. Very sharp and IQ is better than one would expect from a lens at this price point. Super lightweight and pairs very well with my D5500, although most of my shots have been with the D500.

Good and not pricy is an oxymoron
Of course that depends on your definition of pricy
Nikon has made a few inexpensive lenses that are awesome but few most awesome lenses are in the pricy range

This is a New Wide angle from Nikon that is getting good reviews. And it is offered just $9.00 outside your price point.

Agreed. A lens that usually sits on the shelf but great when I need it.

For the $$, few can compare to the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens. Used > $300. This is a fast, fixed 2.8 pro lens for peanuts. Or for a little more. Get the 11-20..in $350-375.. At this price you can use and always get your money back if you want to upgrade! I have owned both. Currently use 11-20. Best Wide angle for $$. IMHO! On a 1.5 crop sensor Nikon it's equivalent to a 16.5-30. I love this lens!

You are on the verge of a very lightweight, versatile, compact kit that I have been considering myself. The D5500 with the 18-55 AFP is the beginning. The 10-20 AFP gets you the very wide angle for only $310! If you can get the new AFP VR 70-300 (only 14 oz.!), you will have the "Budget/Lightweight Holy Trinity" of lenses!

Tokina. For a DX body, get the 11-16mm. For an FX, get the 16-28mm. Good lenses at a good prices.
