This is about the nicest heron pose I have seen. He had just finished preening. This is better when downloaded, taken with the Nikon D810 with Nikkor 80-400 zoom.

Very nice indeed. Rich

That is a Wonderful photograph! They look so calm but they are such deadly predators. Thanks for sharing it with us. Cheers.

Great perspective! My favorite bird, thanks for sharing. You must have been pretty close, as with f8 the DOF is very narrow.

Thank you! I like the owl in your avatar, too. Those birds have paid us a visit in Wisconsin this year.

Thanks we have several here now. May go Saturday and shoot it in the snoe

You are more brave than I am in this weather. I hope it moderates by then. We were -14 this morning in Illinois.

Thank you so much! I finally have the camera/lens combination I like, and the magic component--luck!

It was quite close--if I recall, the lens was not at full zoom. I only took two frames, and then retreated so he would not spook. f8 is my compromise to keep the shutter speed high enough to hand-hold the camera without resorting to exceedingly high iso settings. It is usually acceptable, but you probably notice the tip of his beak is a little soft. The earlier heron I did was in the plane, so-to-speak, and sharp throughout. Thanks for your comments!

I'm holding out for a good picture with a fish. That may be too much to ask. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much, Swamp-Cork! It was fun to get this shot--you don't get them every day.
